Walmart taking iPhone 5 pre-orders Friday morning, cheaper than competitors

Walmart will be taking pre-orders for the iPhone 5 at its US stores from Friday morning – for a price that undercuts its competitors.

Following the unveiling of the latest iPhone in San Francisco on Wednesday, it’s possible many owners of the 4S are already looking at their device like it belongs in a museum. It’s a safe bet many will be chomping at the bit to rid themselves of their ‘ancient’ handset in favor of the new one, with its bigger screen and faster processor.

If you happen to be one of these people, or if your current phone is on its last legs and the iPhone 5 seems like a fine replacement, you may be interested to know that Walmart will be taking pre-orders for the new handset at its US stores from Friday morning – for a price that undercuts its competitors.

The retail giant is offering the 16GB version of Apple’s new phone with a $189.97 price tag, as part of a two-year contract. Meanwhile, Apple, AT&T and Verizon will be selling the same phone for 10 bucks more – $199. Walmart’s prices for the 32GB and 64GB versions aren’t known.

Those choosing to buy the new handset from the store are asked to pre-order in person. In return for a $25 deposit, you’ll be given a reservation card, needed for when you collect the phone a week later.

Walmart is also slashing the price of the old iPhone 4S from $148 to $89.97, with a two-year contract. Even cheaper is the iPhone 4, going for just 97 cents with a two-year contract. That’s down from $48.88. If the iPhone 5 seems a little on the pricey side but you’d still like to bag yourself an iPhone, you have choices.

Many analysts believe sales of the Cupertino company’s new smartphone will break all records, selling 10 million units even before the end of the month. The iPhone revolutionzed the handset market when it burst onto the scene in 2007, and in the intervening years has sold a staggering 244 million units.

Users upgrading from an earlier iteration to the new model will gain a lighter, slimmer device with a larger screen, a faster processor, 4G LTE compatibility, and a better camera.

It’ll be available for pick-up on September 21.

There’s nothing inherently wrong with the way default browsers behave on their native devices. For example, Internet Explorer does what you’d think it does: browse the internet. It’s faster, easier to use, and better built for mobile devices than the majority of other options on the market. It’s just plain good and makes browsing that much easier.

Isis mobile payment system delayed in trial cities

Isis mobile payment system delayed in trial cities
We're a little further from Isis' "near" field communication

Isis is more like "Is-not" in trial cities Salt Lake City, Utah and Austin, Texas. The NFC mobile payment system backed by Verizon, AT&T and T-Mobile was supposed to roll out to these two locations by the end of the summer, but it is now delayed.

Saying that there's no one reason for the delay, Isis head of marketing Jaymee Johnson told FierceMobileContent, "I would characterize where we are as checking items off the punch list."

That checklist doesn't come with a definitive finish date, however. Johnson only said that the carrier-backed NFC venture will have more updates in October.

Making the point-of-sale for Isis

Despite the delay, Johnson still made the case for Isis as a leading point-of-sale contender. Hundreds of merchants in Salt Lake City and Austin are ready for the mobile wallet system to launch, he told FierceMobileContent.

Likewise, Isis has four leading payment networks waiting to go on the other end: JPMorgan Chase, Capital One, American Express and BarclayCard, according to its website.

Naturally, the Isis mobile wallet app will be compatible with yet-to-be-announced Verizon, AT&T, T-Mobile devices. Sprint, not surprisingly, is the only major U.S. carrier missing from the "Isis Ready" carrier list, as it's not part of the joint venture.

Ensuring your mobile payments aren't available to everyone (i.e. thieves), Isis boasts a Wallet PIN for security and allows you to remotely suspend your account if your phone is stolen.

All of these features are available from Isis' NFC competition, Google Wallet, which launched one year ago this month. But the carrier-backed mobile payment system has time; Apple didn't jump on the NFC bandwagon with the iPhone 5 announcement.

Instagram updates mobile website: Are full profiles next?

instagram desktop app

Instagram has rolled out a new design to its mobile website to more closely match its full site's design, adding hope to the rumor that profile updates are next in line.

With the Instagram and Facebook deal finally approved by the Federal Trade Commission, Instagram has unveiled its latest update to its platform. Instagram’s mobile website will now sport a new look and feel that closely reflects what you’d find when viewing photos on Instagram from your desktop browser.

instagram mobile page update

Before this update, users have not been able to interact with the mobile pages on Instagram. But this update changes all that. The “Like” and comment buttons are now larger, making them easier to use. And at the top right hand corner of Instagram’s mobile pages, you’ll find an “Open in App” button which will open the same Instagram page that you’re currently browsing within the native app on your smartphone.

More importantly, it also provides more evidence to the rumor that Instagram has its sights set on porting the functionalities you’d find on its mobile app to the Web.

In June, Instagram silently rolled out a new update to user Web profiles incorporated interactive buttons for liking and commenting on photos. To its user’s disappointment, that update had not yet addressed the demand for a profile page and discovery features, despite the existence of such features on the mobile app.

But that could all change in the near future as the company is now officially a part of Facebook.

In July, web designer, Cole Reinke, noticed a curious feature when logged into his account on Instagram.com. Typically users signed into Instagram’s browser app can only edit their profile information, but Reinke’s account had a non-functional “View Profile” button that disappeared as quickly as it surfaced.

If it’s true that that Instagram was testing out a profile page for the Web, we’re hoping that the complete transition of converting Instagram’s native app to the Web will come in the next update, now that its mobile and desktop pages are now cohesive.

Cricket gets first crack at prepaid iPhone 5 on Sept. 28

Cricket gets first crack at prepaid iPhone 5 on Sept. 28
Coming to a prepaid and regional carrier near you

While it didn't merit a mention at Wednesday's Apple media event, Leap Wireless subsidiary Cricket Communications announced that it too will get the new iPhone 5.

In a very brief press release issued Thursday, Cricket rushed to be the first to announce availability of a prepaid iPhone 5 beginning Friday, Sept. 28.

"Cricket Communications, a leading provider of innovative and value-driven wireless services, and a wholly-owned subsidiary of Leap Wireless International, Inc., today announced it will offer iPhone 5, the thinnest and lightest iPhone ever, to customers in select Cricket markets in the U.S. beginning Friday, Sept. 28," the release reads.

The press release did not reveal details on pricing or capacity, and a request for further information was not immediately returned.

Regional rollout

Cricket won't be alone in providing an alternative to the big three carriers where the iPhone 5 is concerned.

According to 9to5Mac, regional carriers will also add Apple's new handset on Sept.28.

Mississippi's C Spire and Alaska's GCI both announced the iPhone 5 on their respective websites, while Appalachian Wireless took to Facebook to spread the good news.

The trio of regional carriers promise iPhone 5 pricing will come soon.

Sprint’s HD Voice won’t work with iPhone 5

Sprint Logo

The iPhone 5 will support HD Voice, but not on Sprint's network, we've learned.

Full Coverage From Apple's 9/12 iPhone 5 Launch EventApple’s faster, lighter, and thinner, new iPhone 5 was unveiled yesterday. We learned that it supports 4G LTE and it will be released on Sprint, Verizon, and AT&T in the US.

We’re now hearing that there’s bad news for Sprint customers. Despite the fact that Sprint is the first U.S. carrier to embrace HD Voice, a new technology that enables much clearer phone calls over a cellular network, the iPhone 5 will not work with the carrier’s HD Voice service. Sprint spokesperson Michelle Leff Mermelstein told Phone Scoop that the iPhone 5 will not support Sprint’s version of the wideband audio technology. The reason is, of course, quite technical. A majority of carriers use WCDMA networks to improve the quality of speech audio on phones, but Sprint uses CDMA 1x Advanced technology, which isn’t compatible with Apple’s new flagship smartphone. Ever the stickler to streamline its manufacturing processes, Apple is not making a custom version of the iPhone 5 specifically for Sprint.

Out of the 240 carriers that will sell the iPhone 5 worldwide, only 20 of them currently support HD Voice and none of them are in the United States. AT&T and Verizon have no support for wideband audio right now, but it is expected soon.

HD Voice should take off alongside LTE networks and it will drastically increase the quality of call audio, but it’s likely to be 2013 before it sees widespread adoption stateside.

Vodafone confirms iPhone 5 Facetime over 3G included in data allowance

Vodafone confirms iPhone 5 Facetime over 3G included in data allowance
Say cheese

Vodafone has confirmed that its customers will be able enjoy Facetime over 3G (VoIP) on the new iPhone 5 as part of their data allowance.

TechRadar was told that customers on a Vodafone Red plan, which start at £29 per month, would have Facetime over 3G included in their bundled data allowance.

A Vodafone spokesperson said: "The iPhone 5 will be available on Vodafone Red plans, giving customers access to Voice over IP services (including Facetime over 3G) as part of their data allowance."

iPhone 4 and 4S also included

He continued: "Existing pay monthly iPhone 4 and 4S customers on price plans of more than £40 a month already have VoIP included and anyone can move to Vodafone Red plans without extending their commitment provided they pay the same or more each month."

Networks are hastily trying to court customers to choose the iPhone 5 on their network, and especially as EE has the latest handset exclusively on 4G, the likes of Vodafone and O2 are pulling out all the stops to entice Apple lovers their way.

O2 announced earlier today that it was looking to accelerate the development of its 4G network, and is offering customers an early upgrade to a 4G handset next year, if they buy the iPhone 5 at launch.

We've contacted the other networks to see if Facetime over 3G will be included in their data allowances as well, and we'll update this article once we hear back.

SWARM Web app helps physical retailers combat Amazon deals

how swarm works

SWARM, a new Web app, will help brick-and-mortar retailers combat online competition by offering users good deals in real time.

Retailers are jumping on the mobile app bandwagon, but it’s impossible to download every single app that your favorite retailers offer. This is where SWARM comes into play. A next-generation shopping aid that doesn’t need to be downloaded, SWARM helps shoppers shop by simply stepping into a participating retail location.

SWARM is the brainchild of former Gannett executives Ryan Denehy, SWARM’s Executive Vice President, and Rudd Davis, SWARM’s CEO, who found a competitive advantage in bypassing the need to download a shopping app in the first place.

“We realized that if we could remove the barrier to entry by eliminating the need to have to download anything, and just create an interactive in-store experience delivered right to someone’s phone, the consumer would win by having an improved in-store experience saving time, saving money,” Denehy explained to Digital Trends.

SWARM Cynergy HomeThe duo developed an in-browser mobile client in HTML5 that prompts a shopper stepping into a participating retailer’s doors with the option to open that retailer’s SWARM app in the mobile browser. The app’s features are tailored to each retailer’s needs, and it’s skinned with the retailer’s branding. If you walk into JCrew, for example, a notification will pop-up on your smartphone and ask you if you’re interested in opening JCrew’s mobile browser app for a 10 percent discount.

SWARM, for both customers and retailers, is actually an efficient service. The app only pops-up at the physical retail location and provides its users with useful information, like listings of new or discounted products. To help guide shoppers that unsure of which brand to purchase, extra content like product descriptions or reviews from a publisher  (like from Digital Trends, for example) could be fed through SWARM. Then, of course, discounts and promotions will surface through the app based on the aisles that you peruse. Best of all, your data plan won’t be depleted. SWARM uses its own WiFi router that the company provides to every participating retailer.

Behind the scenes, SWARM isn’t just a browser-based app. In conjunction with the SWARM router that takes just five minutes to install and connects to the retailer’s existing network, there’s also a robust analytic dashboard for participating retailers to track their customer’s shopping habits.

“Our platform allows retailers to identify whether a customer is a first time shopper or a returning user. From there we’re able to offer lots of different features connected to that retailer,” Denehy said.

SWARM Cynergy RewardsSWARM can triangulate every shopper’s position in the store within a couple of feet, and even find out if shoppers are checking Amazon or using a price comparison app while they’re in the store. (A slightly terrifying proposition, if you ask us.) If SWARM detects that a shopper is checking prices on another app, the retailer can then send what Denehy calls a “rescue offer,” which allows the retailer to send that specific user a discount on a particular product in an attempt to entice them to make the purchase within the store.

EBay and Amazon are undoubtedly stiff competitor for brick and mortar retailers, and it doesn’t help that these company’s apps are the top two most used shopping and commerce in the United States, according to a Nielsen poll. While there’s no way to prevent customers from pulling out their smartphones, SWARM just might be a retailer’s last line of defense.

SWARM, which had a soft yet official launch last week, signed up 100 retailers to its pilot program spread throughout three categories: clothing and accessories, footwear, and sporting goods. But that’s not the end of it. Before the holiday season, SWARM will announce several hundred more, including national chains.

SWARM is just one app in a new trend that’s emerging as shopping apps are increasingly becoming a crucial digital companion for the shoppers among us. In fact, in 2012, 47 percent of American smartphone owners have used a shopping app and have accessed these apps on average 17 times, according to Nielsen.

Shoppers may be comforted by the realization that that our shopping experience in the near future will be dynamic. Just as online retailers do now, brick-and-mortar retailers will soon know exactly what we like, purchase (or are hesitant to purchase), and tailor their in-store shopping experience based on our habits. Now bring on the deals.

Apple iPhone 5 expected to sell 10M units this month alone

The Apple iPhone 5 is barely out the door and pre-orders haven't even started yet, but analysts have already come up with the first forecasts for its market performance. RBC Capital Markets is expecting the new iOS flagship smartphone to ship 8 to 10 million units this month alone.

The iPhone 5 will only launch on September 21, but it will already be available in 31 countries before the month's end. Given that the iPhone 4S managed 4 million sales across just 7 markets in its first weekend alone, you can see that the RBC Capital Markets predictions are quite realistic.

The total iPhone shipments (including 4 and 4S) for the third quarter are expected to reach 33 million, which would be an improvement over the 26 million sold in Q2. However, should this predication come true, the company won't be able to beat its record-setting holiday quarter last year. That should happen in Q4 though, as the iPhone 5 reaches over 100 countries.

Some might argue that the Apple iPhone 5 isn't the biggest upgrade imaginable, but then again, neither was the iPhone 4S and that didn't stop it from becoming the most successful iPhone, as well as the best selling smartphone to date.

Sony Xperia T release date pegged for September 27-29

Sony Xperia T release date pegged for September 27-29
Falls in line with what Sony is saying

The Sony Xperia T is expected to make its way into shops between September 27 and 29, but if you fancy some SIM-free action you might have a bit of a wait.

Speaking to a spokesperson from Expansys, TechRadar was told that Sony is planning to launch its latest flagship smartphone between the 27 and 29 of this month, however the exact date is yet to be finalised.

This date falls in line with a statement we recieved earlier today from Sony, which said: "We are still on track to deliver the Sony Xperia T before the end of the month."

Contract killer

However the site doesn't expect to be able to stock the Xperia T until as late as possibly January, as talks with Sony revealed the handset will be only available on contract first, direct from networks and from a couple of high street retailers.

Carphone Warehouse and Phones4U, understood to be the two retailers given exclusive access to the Sony Xperia T early doors, already have a range of tariffs associated with the smartphone on their sites, but currently only with Orange and O2.

Three has also confirmed that it will be ranging the Sony Xperia T, although we're yet to hear any pricing details, and we'd expect Vodafone and T-Mobile to follow suit in due course.

The spokesperson also mentioned that Expansys expected to see the Sony Xperia J arrive during mid-October, following its talks with the Japanese manufacturer.

Sony Xperia T: When will you get it?

Sony Xperia T: When will you get it?
Must. Have. Bond. Phone.

Now that you know James Bond will be rocking the Sony Xperia T, we're sure you're all dying to get your hands on it.

Well, sure you want it for the 007 thing, but also for the 4.6-inch Bravia display, the 13MP camera and the dual-core Snapdragon processor and all that. So when and where and for how much can you get it?

Update: TechRadar has spoken to Sony, who said: "We are on track to deliver the Sony Xperia T before the end of the month."

Carphone Warehouse

The retailer hasn't been shy about coming forward with confirmation that it will launch all three of Sony's new Xperia devices. It reckons Sony Xperia T UK release date will be September 5 - but that has turned out now to be false.

Update: Tariffs for the Xperia T have appeared on the Carphone Warehouse site, with the retailer offering contracts starting at £26/£29 per month respectively on Orange and O2.

Vodafone

The Sony Xperia T is definitely making its way Voda-wards, but with no more accurate date than "very soon" and no pricing details just yet. Meanwhile, the lower-spec Xperia J will also be available on the network around the same time.

O2

We're still waiting to hear from the bubbly network about whether or not it'll be offering the Xperia T, even though Carphone Warehouse appears to know it will range the handset.

EE (formerly Everything Everywhere)

Neither Orange nor T-Mobile has been forthcoming with details on the new Sony phones – we'll be on their cases 'til we find out if the Xperia T is coming to Ev Ev.

Update: According to Carphone Warehouse, Orange at least will be stocking the the Xperia T.

Three

Three has confirmed that it will be ranging the Xperia J, but potential kill-license holders may have to shop elsewhere as there's no word on the Xperia T yet.

Virgin Media

TechRadar has been in touch with Virgin Media and won't rest until we can confirm or deny that the network will be offering the Bond-friendly phone.

We'll be updating this page with more details as we get them.

Sony Xperia T SIM-free price announced in UK
Are you tempted by the Sony Xperia T?

The first hints at pricing for the flagship Sony Xperia T have appeared online, pricing the handset just above the £400 mark.

Both Clove and Unlocked Mobiles have the Xperia T available for pre-order and both quote very similar, but not identical prices.

Clove is currently asking for £414 is return for the black, 16GB Xperia T, however it does note that the official price, along with the Sony Xperia T release date, is yet to be confirmed.

Expected October?

Unlocked Mobiles on the other hand goes further with its stock estimation, claiming it expects the handset to arrive in early October, and is asking for a whole 98p more for the Xperia T, that's £414.98 for those of you who are numerically impaired.

Carphone Warehouse has also listed a range of tariffs on its website, showing that you'll be able to pick up the Sony Xperia T for free on a reasonable £26 per month, two year contract with Orange (or from £29 per month with O2).

Loose lips sink ships: Why has Tim Cook’s Apple sprung a leak?

Loose lips sink ships: Why has Tim Cook's Apple sprung a leak?

The success of this year's iPhone 5 rumor mill proves one thing: Tim Cook no longer has control of Apple's secrets. Why is that?

apple september 12 announements

Welp, the iPhone 5 is here. And, as feared, not a thing about the device was a surprise. Not the screen size. Not the processor. Not the design. Not the name. Not the release date. Not even the freakin’ headphones. We saw all of these details before, in the months leading up to today’s big announcement. In other words, everything about the iPhone 5 leaked, snatching away Apple’s long-held ability to control the message about its own products — a skillful secrecy that has defined the company for the past decade and helped make it such an astounding success.

None of this is to say that the iPhone 5 is a disappointment, nor lacking in any way. If you like the Apple ecosystem, then the iPhone 5 is great, probably the best phone on the market. Nor do I mean that Apple needs to blow our minds with every product — that’s just not how technological innovation works. Yes, the iPhone was groundbreaking in 2007. And the iPad set fire to the tablet form factor, which wallowed in obscurity and uselessness for a decade before receiving an incendiary dose of the Apple magic.

No — what I’m talking about here is the value of secrecy, and what it means to no longer have the ability or will to keep a secret.

At the D10 Conference in May, Apple CEO Tim Cook famously stated that Apple would “double down on secrecy on products.” But if this year’s iPhone rumor season is anything more than a fluke, it would appear that Cook has either decided to scrap that plan altogether, or fundamentally failed the mission.

It is entirely possible that, with the late Steve Jobs no longer in control, Cook decided to lift the iron curtain that has long surrounded Apple for strategic purposes. Some have suggested that, because the new iPhone now has an entirely different dock connector, Apple decided to leak the information in the press as a thinly veiled heads up to third-party accessory makers whose business would be monumentally impacted by the change. But why not simply share this information directly, and demand the same level of secrecy as Apple has historically required? Hasn’t Tim Cook ever heard of a non-disclosure agreement?

The more viable conclusion is that Apple has lost its ability to keep a secret. Why is that?

One theory is that Tim Cook is simply not as feared by Apple’s suppliers as Jobs was. Jobs is infamous for his brutal inflexibility, with employees and business partners alike. Cook, by contrast, is reportedly not nearly as frightening a leader. His wrath not as wrathful. His iron fist a bit rubbery.

Of course, it may simply be that Apple has grown too large for secrecy to remain a viable option. As of 2011, Apple listed (pdf) more than 150 companies in its supply chain. Perhaps this year it reached a breaking point: the list simply grew too long to stay in one solid piece. And out of the cracks flowed the company’s secrets.

Maybe. But I find it difficult to dismiss Cook’s role in it. For whatever reason, Apple’s relationship with its suppliers has drastically changed during his tenure. Leaks of iPhone 5 components were constant and nearly systematic. Nearly every week, for months on end, new tidbits about the device made their way onto the Web. Not just blurry shots of nearly unrecognizable prototypes as we occasionally saw during Jobs’ reign, but full videos of people showing off what we now know to be authentic iPhone 5 components.

Have Foxconn leaders sensed Apple’s new, less-dangerous demeanor, and allowed the many iPhone components to make their to leak into the public for their own purposes? Or perhaps it was LG Display, or Japan Display, where the iPhone 5 screens are made, which saw the weakness and let down its guard?

It’s impossible for me to say where exactly the leaks came from, or whether there was a single source or many. What I can say, however, is that if this is Tim Cook doubling down on Apple’s secrecy, then he just lost that hand.

iPhone 5 'world's thinnest smartphone' claim in dispute

iPhone 5 'world's thinnest smartphone' claim in dispute
Should you measure the thinnest or thickest point?

Apple's claim that the iPhone 5 is the world's thinnest smartphone may not be true as Huawei and Oppo already offer up super-slender opposition.

During the iPhone 5 keynote yesterday Phil Schiller, Apple's senior VP of worldwide marketing, had this to say about the new handset: "It's the thinnest and lightest iPhone we've ever made, and best of all, it's the world's thinnest smartphone."

Sliding in at just 7.6mm, the new iPhone certainly has a slender body, but there seems to be thinner out there.

Huawei and Oppo may have a case

Back in January at CES 2012, Chinese manufacturer Huawei announced its Ascend P1 S, claiming at the time it was the world's thinnest smartphone, measuring 6.68mm at its thinnest point.

However the P1 S also features a bulge at one end, which Huawei were not so forth-coming about in terms of dimensions, so the reality could well be that at its thickest point it doesn't beat the iPhone 5 – rather misleading if you ask us.

But wait, another Chinese manufacturer may have a genuine claim, and it comes in the form of the little known Oppo Finder, measuring an impossible 6.65mm at its thinnest point, and more importantly 7.1mm at its thickest.

Sure it's not 4G enabled, nor is it currently available outside of China, but in terms of the "world's thinnest smartphone" claim, it's surely got Apple beat here.
