Apple sued for $2 Billion in Germany

Apple has been sued for $2 Billion by the German company, IPCom, due to alleged patent infringements.

The patent is for mobile phones giving priority to emergency calls over a cellular network. IPCom purchased the patent from Robert Bosch, a German automobile parts maker.

Seeing as this technology has existed in mobile phones for a long time, and virtually every phone uses the feature, it's hard to see IPCom as having a real shot at getting an amount anywhere near what they're asking for in the lawsuit. It seems to be a very obvious case of patent trolling, which is heavily practiced in the consumer technology space.

This isn't the first time, however, that this patent has been brought up in courts. Nokia has also been sued by IPCom, along with other cell phone manufacturers. HTC, Vodafone, Ericsson, Nokia, and Apple have all previously attempted to get this patent deemed invalid by the European Patent Office.

IPCom demands $2.12 Billion from IPCom for the patent infringement. Apple hasn't been reached for comment on the lawsuit, but the Cupertino-based company's legal team probably isn't sweating bullets.

BBM for Android, iOS receives a much-needed Find Friends feature

BBM for Android, iOS receives a much-needed Find Friends feature
BlackBerry PINs reminded us of Nintendo's annoying User ID numbers

BlackBerry is out to build a better messaging system through BBM on Android and iOS devices, and to do that it's helping users build their contacts with an easier method of adding friends.

Today's update adds a much-needed Find Friends feature to the BBM app that's available through the Google Play Store and Apple's App Store.

Previously, new contacts had to exchange annoying eight-digit PINs through texts, emails or a slightly more convenient QR codes.

BlackBerry had previously said it valued this method for message-controlling privacy reasons, according to the BBM app's previous release notes.

BBM could grow

There's no need for extra-stringent privacy controls if no one is using your app in the first place.

Although BBM launched to some success, it still faces competition from the popular What'sApp client and native messaging services like iMessages and Google Hangouts.

The Find Friends feature could not only connect more people who are currently using BBM, but it could also lure more unregistered users to the BlackBerry service.

BBM has an unmissable "Invite to Download" list of all of your phone or tablet's contacts that haven't signed up for the messenger.

Clicking on a name gives you the option to invite them by email and text, which means BBM could quickly grow from its current loyal confines and give us less depressing BlackBerry news one day.

HTC M8 shows its face in newly leaked live photos

After showing us a dual camera setup on its back earlier today, the HTC M8 appeared yet again. This time around, we get to see the alleged front of the yet to be announced smartphone in a couple of leaked photos.

HTC M8 (click to enlarge)

The two images reveal that the upcoming device looks a lot like its predecessor, save for the significantly smaller display bezels and on-screen Android navigation buttons. The latter are said to be removable via a swiping gesture.

We must note that the original source of the photos has already removed them. In our book, this means that we are indeed looking at the real thing.

Alleged specs of the HTC M8 include a Qualcomm Snapdragon 800 SoC, 5” 1080p display, 2GB of RAM, dual 5MP camera setup, and Sense-d Android 4.4.2 KitKat. The device is tipped to go official in March at an event in New York City.

LG G Pro 2 to feature razor-thin 0.4mm bezel, report says

LG G Pro 2 to feature razor-thin 0.4mm bezel, report says
The original G Pro's bezel will get even thinner in the G Pro 2

The LG G Pro 2 is all set to be unveiled at MWC 2014, but the rumors keep pouring in ahead of its official reveal.

The latest concerns the new LG flagship's bezel - or lack thereof, to be exact.

Apparently the G Pro 2 will feature a razor-thin 0.4mm bezel, making its large display look ever larger, according to Korean site FNNews.

And a rumor reported by http://techradar.com/CNET says that screen will measure in at 5.7 inches - slightly smaller than our previous expectation of a full 6 inches, but enormous nonetheless.

Because why not?

The original LG Optimus G Pro rocked a 5.2-inch screen, but we're expecting significantly more from its successor the G Pro 2.

Whatever its size, that display will cover over three quarters of the LG G Pro 2's face, if the rumor about the 04.mm bezel is accurate.

Other expected specs include a Snapdragon 800 processor, 3GB of RAM, and Android 4.4 KitKat.

What's not a rumor is that the G Pro 2 will sport a 13-megapixel camera with optical image stabilization and 4K, slow-mo video capabilities.

Watch out for the phone's official announcement at Mobile World Congress this month.

Nokia patent victory forces HTC to modify smartphones

Nokia patent victory forces HTC to modify smartphones
Ch-ch-changes are coming

A German court has handed yet another patent victory to Nokia, and this one will force Taiwanese smartphone maker HTC to redesign many of its devices, even as the company's attorneys pursue an appeal.

ZDNet reported Tuesday that HTC plans to sidestep a fourth patent infringement defeat handed down in Germany last week by modifying what the company refers to as "redundant technology."

Nokia argued HTC had infringed on its patent EP1579613, which provides a "method and apparatus for enabling a mobile station to adapt its revision level based on network protocol revision level" - and the District Court of Mannheim agreed.

The January 31 ruling protects Nokia's wireless technology used for backwards compatibility between new devices and older networks, but is not considered a standards essential patent, according to the Focus Taiwan News Channel.

Redesign and conquer

Nokia first began lobbing patent infringement claims in HTC's direction back in 2012, claiming the Taiwanese company violated more than 50 patents worldwide.

Since then, the Finnish company has scored victories in England and Wales, with the US International Trade Commission and now regional courts in both Munich and Mannheim, Germany.

But even as Nokia attorneys patted themselves on the back for a job well done, HTC divulged plans to leapfrog the ruling by redesigning the infringing technology, which is apparently no longer used in Germany anyway.

"We are investigating modifications for our handsets to remove this redundant technology," HTC elaborated in a weekend filing with the Taiwan Stock Exchange, adding that it plans to appeal the court's decision.

Samsung skips tap dancing, looks to show Galaxy S5 and Galaxy Gear 2 at MWC 2014

Samsung skips tap dancing, looks to show Galaxy S5 and Galaxy Gear 2 at MWC 2014
Unpacked 5 is coming

It's looking ever more likely that Samsung will be showing off the new Galaxy S5 and Galaxy Gear 2 at the Mobile World Congress later this month.

The NY Times printed a fresh report Samsung plans a relatively low-key event for the Galaxy S5. According to a smartphone industry informant, when the South Korean smart device maker introduced the Galaxy S4 with Broadway bombast the performance fell to deaf ears.

The same source said Samsung is opting for a much more business oriented "Unpacked 5" event at MWC 2014. At the same tradeshow, the upgrade to the Samsung Galaxy Gear is expected to make a showing.

Function over form

Along with a lower key event, the Galaxy S5 is shaping to introduce less gimmicky features as the Galaxy S4 did with Air Gestures' Kinect-like motion detection control the phone without touching the screen.

A new source briefed on the phone's specifications says Galaxy S5 will play it safe by skipping out on the earlier reported Ultra HD 4K screen. Instead the new phone is purported to have more useful upgrades including a better 16-megapixel camera and a higher-performance 64-bit processor.

It seems that new handset is also being skewed to business users with an updated version of Samsung's Knox security software.

Meanwhile, the Korean electronics firm is eager to split away from Android with a new Windows 8.1 Huron smartphone in the pipe and it will demonstrate the new Tizen mobile operating system at a separate event.

Excitement for the Samsung Galaxy S5 has been an up and down roller coaster ride, but we'll have all the finalized details on the handset when it shows on Feburary 24.

Possible Ascend P7 design renders leak

Huawei's Ascend P6 phone was praised for its slim profile while still maintaining top of the line specs. The handset's successor, the P7, has yet to be officially released, but we do know a few things about the device; namely its leaked technical specs. We may also have some leaked image renders of the smartphone, straight from China.

From the renders, it looks very similar to the P6 with its angular lines. The bezel also appears to have been trimmed down (to make room for the reportedly larger screen).

The P7 is supposed to go on sale sometime in April, so it will only be a couple of months before we see whether or not the renders coincide with the actual design of the phone.

Here's a recap of the purported specs that the P7 will have: 4G LTE, Android Kit Kat out of the box, a 2,460mAh battery, 2GB RAM, 16GB internal storage with a microSD card slot, 13MP primary camera and an 8MP front unit, and a 1.6GHz quad-core processor. The P7 is also expected to have its screen size bumped up to 5”, with full 1080p.

Are you excited to snatch up Huawei's upcoming flagship, should the rumored design and specs turn out to be real?

Samsung unveils faux leather-backed Galaxy S4 LTE-A

Samsung is updating its 2013 flagship – the Galaxy S4 – in incremental steps and that has created a confusingly long list of versions. The latest is based on the Galaxy S4 LTE-A and feature faux leather on the back, similar to the Galaxy Note 3.

If you're thinking that's the Galaxy S4 Black Edition, you'd be wrong – that one has the leather but uses the original Snapdragon 600 chipset. Plus, that one is just black.

The new variation has a Snapdragon 800 chipset and LTE-Advanced (150Mbps downlink). It also features three color versions.

The color versions in question are Rose Gold White, Rose Gold Black and Deep Black. The first feature rose gold accents while the third one is in standard black and silver.

Rose Gold White • Rose Gold Black • Deep Black

The new Samsung Galaxy S4 LTE-A versions will launch in February in Korea on all three major carriers. This model has 16GB of expandable memory.

The press release makes no mention of a worldwide launch. The Galaxy S4 LTE-A did take its sweet time reaching Europe (where it's available as the S4 Advance), so we have doubts we'll see it outside of its home market before the MWC (which might bring the Galaxy S5).

Apple iPhone 6 will allegedly feature a 10 MP F/1.8 camera

It's still pretty early to be talking about the next generation of Apple iPhone, but the latest report from a Chinese website suggests that the iPhone 5s successor will support an enhanced camera and improved filters over the current model.

Citing the supply chain sources, the report claims that the upcoming iPhone will feature a 10 megapixel rear camera with an aperture of f/1.8. Furthermore, the new camera is said to be accompanied with new and improved filters, which is lighter and thinner than previously used IR filters.

The lighter filters will help capture quality images as it minimizes the color shift of CMOS sensors. The rumored brighter f/1.8 aperture will boost low-light performance and it allow you to do images with shallow depth of field and blur the background while keeping sharp focus on the closer subjects.

Apple is also working on a new image stabilization mechanism, according to a recent patent filling. It looks like the company is working very hard to regain some of ground it lost in the camera department with the next iPhone.

Apple's iPen could be far more awesome than we thought

Apple's iPen could be far more awesome than we thought
Will Apple REALLY launch a stylus?

The Apple iPen has popped up again showing off more features that will help it become smarter than the average stylus.

Whilst it won't be out to steal picnic baskets the latest patents, picked up by Patently Apple, show that an Apple stylus could be a modular device (in a similar way to Motorola's Project Ara smartphone) so users can pick and choose what they want as well as upgrading features.

Amongst these features are the abilities to project images, work as a laser pointer or transform into a Dictaphone.

Another example suggests a built in camera allowing the stylus to detect movement in the same way as an optical mouse or double up as a scanner.

Want more?

In-air gestures could also be supported but the use of gyro/accelerometers; the swipe could see the turn of a page or move to a next slide or double as a mouse replacement.

Wireless charging is apparently set to feature in any upcoming iPen, as well as the ability to use standard non-rechargeable alkaline or zinc-carbon batteries. Don't go expecting a 9-volt or D battery though.

The leaked iPen might not be enough to signal an upcoming 12.9-inch iPad Pro, but with each of these features coming with a very heavy professional slant we're not going to bet against an Apple stylus launching alongside a larger iPad.

Either way with the iPhone 6, iPad Pro, and iWatch all set to make their debuts in 2014, we could be about to see Apple's biggest year yet.

Samsung and Apple now in two-thirds of US smartphones

As yet another quarter comes to a close it seems that comScore might as well just start using the same template for their US smartphone market share reports as the same story keeps repeating itself: Samsung and Apple on the rise.

The latest finding has each of the two top OEMs solidify their positions at the top of the smartphone market, with increases of 1.2 points. Apple now has 41.8% of the market, with Samsung coming in second at 26.1%. At the start of 2014, two-thirds of smartphone users in the US have either an Apple or a Samsung device.

A distant third is Motorola, which had taken the position over from LG with 6.7%.

When it comes to smartphone platforms, Android continues to dominate with over 50% of all devices running Google's OS. However, all platforms besides iOS lost market share in the last quarter of 2013, with Apple's OS gaining 1.2 points to control 41.8%.

KitKat has its fingers in 2% of Android devices

KitKat has its fingers in 2% of Android devices
Just wait until MWC

It has been 3 months since the launch of Google's latest mobile OS, Android 4.4 KitKat, and current figures show that it is now on just under 2% of all Android devices.

This shows a rise of 0.4% since January, taking KitKat up to a total of 1.8% devices that logged into the Google Play Store during the week ending February 4 2014.

Owners of even the latest flagships like the HTC One and Samsung Galaxy S4 are still waiting for their updates, although both handsets are expected to see the upgrade in the next few weeks.

That 1.8% then is made up solely of Google's Nexus line such as the Nexus 7, Nexus 5 and the ageing Nexus 4, Motorola's Moto G and Moto X, and the Google Play editions of the HTC One and Samsung Galaxy S4 which are only available in the US.

Its all Google at the moment

Faces may be left a little red at Mountain View given the superfast uptake of iOS updates on the iPhone and iPad, but Google's working with multiple manufacturers and devices, whereas Apple controls the whole iOS show.

At this stage in Android 4.1 Jelly Bean's life uptake was still languishing on 1.2%. Interestingly though, Jelly Bean still seems to be growing thanks to the launches of recent handsets that hadn't been able to get their hands on the latest OS before launch.

With MWC 2014 just around the corner you can expect Android 4.4 KitKat to grow rapidly as all manner of devices made for Android 4.4 KitKat are launched, including the Samsung Galaxy S5.

Hopefully it won't be too long before we see KitKat as the dominant Android force given its ability to run on handsets with as low as 512MB RAM. Maybe that means we'll finally see the death of Gingerbread - the three-year-old OS still commands 20% of Android users.

  • The HTC M8 will definitely come with Android 4.4 KitKat.

You only live twice: Apple may resurrect iPhone 4

You only live twice: Apple may resurrect iPhone 4
Guess who's back, back again

Apple may be about to resurrect the iPhone 4 which it finally killed off last year after the launch of the iPhone 5S and iPhone 5C.

According to Indian site The Economic Times, Apple is planning on bringing its fourth generation smartphone back to life - but only for developing markets.

The news apparently comes from three senior executives, but there's no firm indication of who they are.

They claim Apple has already produced new iPhone 4 stock, with handsets sporting a December 2013 build date and estimates suggesting 50,000 to 60,000 units have already entered India.

Already on sale?

Brazil, India and Indonesia are apparently the three territories in line for some iPhone 4 love - although a quick look on the Brazilian Apple store reveals that the phone is on sale.

It's not clear if this iPhone 4 listing has always been on the site and Brazil still has some stock left, or if it has been recently re-added to the site in light of the phone going back into production.

We have approached Apple for more information, and we'll update this article if we hear back from the Cupertino firm.

If Apple really is rebooting the iPhone 4, does this mean we could see other iDevices brought back from the dead? Perhaps the iPhone 5 will re-emerge to challenge the 5C - we can but dream.

  • Never mind the past, what does the iPhone 6 hold for us?

Android in January: JB and KitKat climb at Gingerbread expense

In December we saw that Jelly Bean and KitKat are the one gaining ground among Android smartphones and, as you could expect, the trend continues in the month of January. Jelly Bean and KitKat are now responsible for 62.5% of all Android devices, while 2.3 Gingerbread and 4 Ice Cream Sandwich have dropped by 1.2 and 0.8 percentage points, respectively.

Jelly Bean's 4.1 release is the only one that has dropped (35.9% in December to 35.5% in January) while version 4.2 climbed from 15.4% to 16.3% and the 4.3 release jumped from 7.8% to 8.9%.

KitKat is growing, albeit at a relatively slow pace - it has moved just 0.4% percentage points and now covers 1.8% of the droids out there. Honeycomb remains at the 0.1% it was a month ago.

As for graphics - OpenGL ES version 2.0 covers a whopping 92.3% of the platform while 3.0 is still only available on 7.6% of the droids.

HTC One 2 leaked again - is it enough of an upgrade?

HTC One 2 leaked again - is it enough of an upgrade?
It won't be long before we see what all the fuss is about

With the HTC One 2 launch expected in the coming weeks, the stage has been set for a whole raft of leaks to start making their way onto the world wide web.

We've not heard of Twitter tipster HTCFamily_RU before but they have managed to get themselves a pretty convincing looking photo of the back of the upcoming HTC One successor.

Just a reminder though, until HTC officially launch the HTC M8 things are still open to change so we're still advising a pinch of salt.

HTC M8 leaked in photo sporting two of everything
Dual sensors AND dual flash (Credit: HTCFamily_RU)

The photo matches previous leaks giving away the second sensor as well as matching leaks from fellow leak artist evleaks who tweeted that the HTC M8 will look "strikingly similar" to the One.

But what is that sensor?

Unfortunately the image isn't clear enough to give away what the second sensor will work as although our best guesses have it as a secondary camera for image refocusing or a fingerprint scanner (like on the HTC One Max).

Included in the image is also a dual LED flash that will give the HTC M8 increased night time photography capabilities in the same way as the iPhone 5S.

Unfortunately there is no photographs of the front of the HTC M8 (or HTC One Two, HTC Two or One+), although HTCFamily_RU does have a rather simple line sketch showing the front looking identical to the HTC One with capacitive buttons.

LG Optimus G Pro to get Android 4.4 KitKat in Q2

LG India has answered a question on Twitter about the company's plans for a KitKat update for the Optimus G Pro. Even though there is no official press statement so far, according to the message sent the update is indeed in the works.

It seems LG is prepping to release Android 4.4 KitKat, probably sweetened by the latest Optimus UI, in Q2 this year. This means, if everything goes right, the update should be hitting the Optimus G Pro phablets by the end of June.

LG, will reportedly skip Android 4.3 in favor of 4.4 KitKat for quite a few devices - LG Optimus F3, LG Optimus F6, LG G Pad 8.3, LG G Pro Lite, LG Optimus F7, LG Optimus L9 II, LG Optimus Vu II. Meanwhile LG has already confirmed the G2 will be getting the official KitKat ROM in March.

Thank you, Prabhjit Singh Walia, for a great tip!

LG Optimus L1 II Tri has three SIMs inside it

LG is releasing a triple-SIM smartphone for the Brazilian market - the Optimus L1 II Tri (yes, LG one two three). The handset is pretty low key with a 3" QVGA (240 x 320), 1 GHz processor and 512 MB RAM. Interestingly, all three of its SIMs support 3G connectivity, though.

The LG Optimus L1 II Tri has a SIM switch button on its front as well as a 2 MP camera on the back with an accompanying Cheese shot feature (take pictures with voice commands). The battery is a 1,540 mAh unit and tasks are handled via an LG-skinned Android 4.1 Jelly Bean. There are also 4 GB of internal storage extendable via the microSD card slot.

There's also Radio recording with Time Machine support, which means the smartphone buffers the track and will record songs off the radio, even before you hit the key. The smart software behind this can even remove a Radio host's voice from a song.

LG Optimus L1 II Tri

The LG Optimus L1 II Tri will come in black, pink and white and will cost around $127. We're sure other emerging markets would want to have this one but there's no word on availability outside of Brazil for now.

HTC M8 first live picture is here, has two rear cameras

HTC M8, the successor of HTC One, has leaked numerous times before. We heard lots of rumors throughout the last couple of months - we saw the rear panel, alleged specs, heard rumors about a twin UltraPixel camera, saw its virtual buttons, the M8 even got tipped for a March release, after a New York announcement.

Today we have the first live picture of the HTC M8, not just the panel. It shows its back, where we can clearly see the twin cameras and the dual-LED flash. This means the next One won't pack a fingerprint sensor, or at least it won't be one on its back.

So, summarizing all the rumors to date, the HTC M8 should pack a 5" 1080p display, run on Snapdragon 800 chipset, and sport twin UltraPixel cameras of unknown (but probably higher than 4MP) resolution. The official announcement event will probably happen in Ney York very soon, while the M8 is expected to hit the shelves in March.

Thank you, Abdul, for the tip!

Moto G launched in India exclusively on Flipkart

The Motorola Moto G has finally been launched in India. For the first time, the company has collaborated with an online retailer for a launch. Moto G will be available exclusively on Flipkart, India's largest e-commerce website, starting tomorrow, February 6.

If you're curious about the pricing, you'll be happy to know that Motorola and Flipkart have done a brilliant job with it. The 8GB model is priced at just INR 12,499 ($200) and the 16GB model is priced at INR 13,999 ($225), unlocked without any contract and inclusive of all taxes and shipping charges. Considering the phone lacks a memory card slot and there is not much difference between the two prices, it makes sense to go for the 16GB model.

It must be noted that the Moto G being sold in India is a dual-SIM variant, unlike the one sold in the US. The phone comes with Android 4.3 at launch and is said to get the 4.4 KitKat update in the coming weeks. This is a departure from the model sold elsewhere that is already running KitKat. It remains to be seen how quickly this model gets the software updates in future and if Motorola maintains the speed it has shown with the Moto X and Moto G in other markets.

For now, Flipkart has an exclusivity deal with Motorola to sell the Moto G in India but that may change in the near future.
