Is Apple working on a solar, inductive and motion-charged iWatch, iPhone?

Is Apple working on a solar, inductive and motion-charged iWatch, iPhone?
Is Apple building a better battery for the iWatch?

Apple is placing greater emphasis than ever on battery technology to enable it's mobile devices to be charged via solar, inductive and motion-powered means, reports have claimed.

The New York Times claims the Cupertino-based company is working hard on building a 'smarter' battery for it's iOS devices and perhaps even the long awaited iWatch smartwatch.

Multiple ex-Apple executives told the paper that solar, in particular, continues to be a major focus for Apple engineers.

In terms of the iWatch, solar, inductive and motion charging would allow users to wear the device for longer periods without needing to charge so often.

Going inductive

The company is particularly concerned with inductive charging for the iWatch, which we've seen in the Google Nexus 4 and Nokia Lumia 920 in recent times.

Those handsets charge the device by placing the devices on a wireless plate, but Apple is working on tech that would allow the charging to take place wirelessly via electromagnetic fields.

The iWatch is expected to arrive at some point this year. Will Apple introduce some new battery tech? Let us know your thoughts in the comments section below.

Red ahead? (credit: @evleaks)

The rumoured red edition of the Google Nexus 5 appears to be a step closer to reality following the leak of an official-looking press render.

Following multiple blurry-cam and unboxing leaks over the last couple of weeks, that man @evleaks appears to have gotten hold of the best look yet.

The images shows the device with a red rear casing and earpiece, but the faceplate itself retains its black bezel.

The Red Nexus 5 has been tipped to launch on February 4, following the leak of an internal document from U.S. network Sprint.

Strong

The Nexus 5, crafted by LG and and also available in black and white, has been a big success for Google, continuing its growing hardware momentum.

It was Google's best-selling device of the last quarter with the company citing "very strong" sales in last week's earnings call.

It has proved an attractive option for smartphone because of its agreeable price-point compared to handsets like the Samsung Galaxy S4 and HTC One.

Nexus 5 has also proved popular among Android enthusiasts who value the raw version of the software and the immediate updates when Google refreshes the operating system.

Archos sees an opportunity in Windows Phone amid swamped Android market

Archos sees an opportunity in Windows Phone amid swamped Android market
Archos will soon join the Windows Phone race

French mobile manufacturer Archos plans to throw its beret in to the Windows Phone arena.

CEO Loic Poirier said the company will launch a handset on Microsoft's gradually improving platform, joining its budget offerings on Android.

Nokia is currently earning a whopping 90 per cent of Windows Phone sales, with big hitters like LG, Samsung and HTC focusing all of their attentions on the Android operating system.

That means a potential opportunity for manufacturers a little lower on the totem pole, like Archos, outside of the densely populated Android market.

New breed rising

"We will launch a Windows Phone handset when the time is right," he told TrustedReviews before explaining its primary focus would remain with Android.

"Before anything else we are focussed on Google," he added.

Other manufacturers like Alcatel and ZTE are also planning to jump in on Windows Phone. Could we be seeing a new breed of handset makers rising on Windows Phone?

ABI Research: WP sales more than double in a year

ABI Research has posted its report on the smartphone market in the final quarter of 2013 and according to it total shipments grew 38% Year-on-Year and 25% sequentially to 287.8 million units. iOS was the big winner in the three month period, increased its sales over Q3 of 2013 by 51% to snatch 18% of the market.

In comparison Android shipments grew just 20% sequentially, which caused its market share to dip to 77% from 80% in Q3. In fact, growth was mostly driven by what the analyst company calls AOSP devices – those that used a modified version of the Google platform and don’t have access to the Google services.

Windows Phone was in a similar position to Android, only managing to squeeze 19% of extra sales in the quarter including the holiday season. Even the multiple price drops didn’t help BlackBerry 10 improve its position as sales continued to slide, but surprisingly the old BlackBerry handsets saw an increase in sales. It still looks very much like game over for the Canadian manufacturer at this point, though and if the company’s to try and regain its positions it will have to start from scratch.

Comparing the current numbers to those for the same period of 2012, tells a slightly different story. Windows Phone is the quickest gainer, managing to more than double its sales, while Android gained 51%. iOS stagnated, adding just 7% to its sales, while BlackBerry saw its shipments fall to half what they were.

Headline stuff week 5: Stroll down memory lane

This week has been a bit boring – at least compared to the exciting events at the end of January in some of the recent years. We spend a lot of time looking forward (the latest tech, leaked upcoming devices) but we've decided that once a week we'll look back to see how far we've come.

Apple iPad announced, is iPod touch on steroids

Undoubtedly the most important event to happen in this week through the years was the Apple iPad announcement from 2010.

The tablet started a craze that's still going strong four years later and has seen and has provoked a response from just about every manufacturer out there. It's specs look really laughable now - which is just another proof of how far the market has gone in four short years.

Meet the dual SIM General Mobile DSTL1 based on Android

The T-Mobile G1, fondly remembered as the first Android phone on the market, had been available for just a few months (in launched October 2008) when the first dual-SIM Android was announced.

Made by a little known brand General Mobile, the DSTL1 was to be unveiled at the Mobile World Congress that year. You might not think much of the phone now, but it started a long line of multi-SIM Androids.

It wasn’t the first dual-SIM smartphone, the Windows Mobile-running HKC W1000 beat it by nearly a year, but Android's relation with dual-SIM has remained strong, while the other OSes today stick to one at a time.

In certain markets that's a huge advantage and just about every Android phone maker has a dual-SIM phone. There are 487 devices in our database, ranging from entry-level to flagship. There's even dual-SIM phablets (and the "phablet" didn’t exist back in 2009, a 5+ inch device would have been called a tablet since it was "huge").

Anyway, despite voice, text and data prices falling, dual-SIM devices still have a place. And thanks to pioneers like the GM DSTL1, you're not limited to dual-SIM feature phones but can have all the conveniences of a modern smartphone.

Acer make a step on the smartphone market at MWC 2009

Speaking of smartphones, news broke out of another exciting smartphone development to hit the Mobile World Congress 2009 – Acer is entering the ring. The company had recently bought E-Ten Glofiish, maker of Windows Mobile handsets, and was eager to put it to work.

Acer followed through on its promises to unveil a smartphone in late 2008 or early 2009 and brought four Windows Mobile-powered smartphones ("PocketPCs" in the lingo of the day), including a dual-SIM smartphone. But that's a story for another week.

Anyway, Acer hasn’t had the explosive success of other Chinese brands with its Android-powered smartphones. However, the company is still deeply involved with Android and it's the budget-friendly Iconia tablets that get the most attention. It did score some wins on the Android phone front too, like the first smartphone to record 4K video, the Liquid S2.

5 megapixel Nokia 6700 classic comes with GPS and Nokia Maps

Smartphones were an awkward thing back then, it was Nokia's Series 40 that ruled the world. The Finnish company had the 6xxx line of phones that are fondly remembered as thin, premium devices with rock-solid battery life and practically indestructible bodies.

The Nokia 6700 was the last of its kind – a lust-worthy candy bar phone with a quality metal body – and it brought some advanced functionality, not the least of which was a built-in GPS receiver and navigation software by Nokia.

This was before the company offered free navigation on all its smartphones, mind you. Funnily enough, that happed a year later, almost to the day. The faith of Nokia's maps eventually took them to the new platform – Windows Phone – where it's still the primary mapping services. And for Nokia-made WP handsets, the voice-guided navigation is still free.

Another curious note we made back then was that the 6700 included a WebKit-based Nokia browser. The rendering engine is now more associated with iOS and Android (though Google forked it), but it has run on feature phones too. Also, it featured Flash Light 3, a stripped down version of a technology now defunct on smartphones.

And don't forget the 5MP camera – it produced some of the best-quality shots we had seen from a phone and was a benchmark for 5MP shooters, even if the video recording capabilities were nothing special (VGA @ 15fps).
