Apple reported financial results for Q3 of the fiscal 2013

Apple announced its financial results for Q3 of the fiscal 2013. The Cupertino-based tech giant posted a net profit of $6.9 billion from a quarterly revenue of $35.3 billion.

Apple sold a record for the June quarter 31 million iPhones - a sharp increase over the 26 million sold for the same quarter of last year. They contributed to a solid growth in revenue from iTunes and software, and other related services.

The iPad and Mac sales however, were down compared to the previous year. Apple moved 14.6 million iPads and 3.8 million Macs as opposed to 17 million and 4 million respectively for the same period in 2012.

Motorola DROID Mini announced by Verizon, to cost $99 on contract

A refresh of last year's DROID RAZR M, the DROID Mini is Motorola's/Verizon's attempt jump onboard the 'Mini' nomenclature alongside recent similar offerings from Samsung and HTC.

The Mini is part of Verizon's just-announced refresh of their DROID lineup, alongside the new DROID Ultra and DROID Maxx.

As expected, the DROID Mini is the smallest of the new trio, sporting a 4.3-inch 720p Super AMOLED screen. It is the only one to feature Motorola's edge-to-edge display, aimed at minimizing the bezels on either side of the screen.

Other specs include a dual-core 1.7GHz CPU with 2GB of RAM and 16GB of internal memory, a 10MP camera capable of 1080p video recording, alongside a 2MP front-facer also capable of fullHD recording. All of this will be powered by a 2130 mAh battery.

Like the previous DROID, it features Kevlar protection, although this model features a reinforced unibody to go with the Gorilla Glass up front.

There's also a few software optimizations thrown into the mix, such as Droid Zap, which lets you quickly send files to other smartphones via the cloud. The new camera interface from Motorola is also here, which aims to minimize the amount of icons cluttering the screen.

The entire DROID lineup will be available on August 20 from Verizon, and the Mini can be preordered for $99 on-contract right here.

BlackBerry A10's front and less-exciting back appear in Twitter pics

BlackBerry A10's front and less-exciting back appear in Twitter pics
Little bit HTC One, Galaxy S4, and iPhone 5, a whole lot of A10 (credit: Vũ Thạnh)

The BlackBerry A10 has allegedly popped up in another photo leak, this time with both its front and back sides entering the spotlight.

Vietnamese Twitter user Vũ Thạnh (@nvthanh1994) snapped three photos of what he claims is the BlackBerry A10, code named "Aristo."

The BlackBerry Z10 successor is rumored to pack a 5-inch 720p Super AMOLED display, a 1.7GHz dual-core processor and discrete GPU. It's also said to have eight and 2-megapixel cameras, 16GB of storage, LTE, NFC, microSD, a 2,800 mAh battery and BlackBerry 10.2.

Wow, we actually have a lot on this device, don't we?

Those specs might not exactly make the BlackBerry A10 a Galaxy S4 or HTC One killer, but it should nevertheless prove the most powerful BB10 phone yet.

Home for the holidays

The BlackBerry A10 is expected to arrive in time for the holidays, possibly as early as November.

Today's leak seems to match the last one, which appeared earlier this month on BGR.

Shortly after that leak, a full A10 specs sheet for the expected BlackBerry hero leaked as well.

It's even still got the plastic on

Yet another A10 leak, also from Vietnam, appeared around the same time, this one a video.

The exact form factor of the A10 has yet to completely take shape, as few have held it in their hands, but we're certainly liking the look of it. Expect to see more and more of the A10 as the summer comes to a close.

SanDisk's Wireless Flash Drive hopes to solve mobile storage issues

SanDisk's Wireless Flash Drive hopes to solve mobile storage issues
Fill your storage boots

In today's world of unibody design, some smartphones and tablets are missing out on expandable storage options. But SanDisk thinks it has the answer.

SanDisk is well known for its SD and microSD cards, but the firm is looking to do something a bit different with its new device - the Connect Wireless Flash Drive.

The Wireless Flash Drive connects to your handset via Wi-Fi and allows you to wirelessly steam media to your smartphone with the help of an app. You can also save data from your device to the drive.

USB, but not as you know it

As well as that, it works as a conventional USB stick, so you can plug it into your computer to transfer files on and off the drive - although it's technically a microSD card slotted into the stick.

A key feature of the Wireless Flash Drive is the ability to stream three separate HD videos at the same time to different devices, which would be great for families trying to keep kids quiet on a long trip. In total, eight devices can be connected to the drive at any one time.

The four hours of streaming provided by the battery isn't quite so stellar, but if you're just using it to save photos taken on your phone, we've been assured it'll last much longer.

Is the price right?

We were a little disappointed to find out that it doesn't support larger microSD cards (we'd have liked to stick our 64GB card into it), but you can use other manufacturer's 16GB and 32GB offerings as well as the bundled SanDisk one.

If you fancy picking up a Connect Wireless Flash Drive you'll need to fork out £41.90 for the 16GB version, or £49.90 for the 32GB, which feels a little on the steep side to us.

Windows Phone 8 and BlackBerry 10 users are out of luck though - the application required for use is only Android and iOS compatible for now.

Nokia Lumia 625 brings a 4.7" screen, LTE to the masses

Nokia's teaser from yesterday promised something big for today and it delivered, sort of. The Nokia Lumia 625 is an entry-level Windows Phone 8 handset with a rather big (for the class) screen – 4.7".

That's not groundbreaking, though as the WP7-powered HTC Titan had a 4.7" screen back in 2011. The Lumia 625 is mostly a stretched out 620 with some additional extras.

The Nokia Lumia 625 has a 4.7" IPS LCD with WVGA resolution (480 x 800, 201ppi) and "2.25D" curved Gorilla Glass 2 ("2.5D" has curved edges, we guess "2.25D" means less curvy"). The screen packs Nokia's proprietary image tuning options that let you change the color profile. It has super sensitive touch too, meaning it works with gloves and fingernails.

The phone measures 133.3 x 72.3 x 9.3mm and weighs 159g, roughly the dimensions of the One X, but 29g heavier.

The Nokia Lumia 625 continues the WP tradition of having entry-level phones with fairly high specs (compared to Android's entry level). It packs a dual-core Krait processor at 1.2GHz, 512MB RAM and 8GB of built-in storage, expandable with a microSD card slot.

There's HSPA+ and 4G LTE connectivity, along with Wi-Fi b/g/n, Bluetooth 4.0 + LE and GPS + GLONASS for positioning. Nokia's HERE mapping suit is on board with HERE Drive beta (it gives you free offline GPS navigation for one country).

The main camera is a 5MP shooter that can capture 1080p video and the front-facing camera has VGA resolution. There's an LED flash and one HD mic. Other goodies include Smart Camera and FM radio, meaning the Lumia 625 comes with the Amber update. Free Nokia Music subscription is also included.

The Nokia Lumia 625 will launch in China, Europe, Asia Pacific, India, Middle East, Africa and Latin America in Q3 2013 in a variety of colors (orange, yellow, bright green, white and black), with exchangeable semitransparent shells to easily switch colors (just like the 620).

Nokia Lumia 625 officially unveiled - massive screen for the budget market

Nokia Lumia 625 officially unveiled - massive screen for the budget market
Big, bold, brash and budget

Nokia has finally confirmed its big-screen blower for those that like to spend a little less on their handsets.

As we've seen in countless leaks over the past few weeks, the Nokia Lumia 625 is a phone designed for the lower end of the market, coming in with a 4.7-inch screen. However, while that display is large, it will only be available in a WVGA (800x640) resolution, which positively pales in comparison to the 1080p screens adorning the HTC One and Samsung Galaxy S4.

The screen is an LCD option, compared to the OLED ClearBlack displays used on other Lumias, and has a resolution of 201ppi underneath the Gorilla Glass 2 protection.

Designed to bring 'affordable 4G' to the masses, the phone is also packing a dual-core 1.2GHz Snapdragon S4 chip, albeit with only 512MB of RAM, to offer a decent experience at a low cost for a Windows Phone 8 device. It will be coming with the Amber update, which enables the low-power Bluetooth 4.0 connectivity.

There's only 8GB of internal user memory, but continuing in the confusing style of Windows Phone handsets there's a microSD slot available for up to 64GB of storage of your own business. Hey, we're not going to pry.

Battery life is taken care of with the 2000mAh power pack on the rear; remember that Windows Phone 8 is much kinder on its juice than many other Android handsets, so should last as long as a unit running a 2500mAh battery.

However, that means it's going to be a little heavier in the pocket to allow for that larger battery pack, tipping the scales at nealry 160g for a phone that measures 133.25 x 72.25 x 9.15mm.

Clever little snapper

It's also coming with Nokia's Smart Camera technology from the outset - while it will only take seven shots in burst mode at 1MP level (compared to the 10 higher-res options on handsets such as the Lumia 925) but will come with all the features that app brings, such as action shots and object removal.

The camera in 'normal' mode will be a 5MP snapper with a front-facing VGA option for the horrid trend of self-portrait photography, plus the other lenses seen on Nokia phones, such as Cinemagraph and Panorama modes.

The Nokia Lumia 625 release date has been set for September this year, and in the UK will be coming on EE, Vodafone, O2, Phones4U and Carphone Warehouse, with a wide range of colours (orange, bright green, yellow, white and black) all set to debut together. Plus you can also change the shells yourself, if you're so inclined.

And the price will be pretty competitive, as Nokia believes it will be offered for £200 or €220 before taxes, making it a real option in the middle of the market.
