HTC’s CEO Peter Chou steps back to focus on product development

Peter Chou, the CEO of HTC has stepped back from some of his executive duties in order to focus his attention to product development. His duties have been handed over to Cher Wang – HTC’s co-founder and chairwoman.

The move is described as a temporary one. Ms. Wang has increased her involvement in day to day operations including sales, supplier relations, and marketing. The latter has been acknowledged as a weak link by the company.

Mr. Chou confirmed the changes in an interview with The Financial Times. He explained them with the need to focus more on innovation, as well as on developing the product portfolio.

It is no secret that HTC has been going through a difficult period which resulted in the Taiwanese manufacturer posting its first quarterly loss earlier this month. Peter Chou has been under a lot of criticism lately for the company’s far from great performance.

HTC One max might be making it to AT&T after all

Contrary to the information from its announcement, the HTC One max might be making its way to AT&T after all. A press photo of HTC’s first phablet with AT&T branding made the rounds on Twitter, once again courtesy of @evleaks.

Initially, Sprint and Verizon Wireless were the only US carriers to carry the HTC One max in the United States. Therefore, the appearance of the phablet in AT&T livery surely caught us by surprise.

If the rumor turns out to be the case, the phablet will likely join AT&T’s already impressive smartphone lineup before the holiday shopping season kicks off. It will join the likes of the Samsung Galaxy Note 3 and the LG Optimus G Pro as an alternative for those looking for a large-screen device.

You can find out all about the HTC One max in our detailed review over here.

Xperia Android update schedule surfaces through leaked image

We have already heard about the Xperia Z1, Xperia Z Ultra and Xperia Z getting the Android 4.3 update in the near future. But there is a whole bunch of other Sony phones whose owners must be anxious as to when their phones will be getting the update, if at all.

According to this leaked image that we were sent, it seems that it won't be long for some of the Xperia handsets to get the update. Other than the ones we already know, the Xperia ZL, ZR, C, L, E dual and T would be getting the update this quarter. Meanwhile, the M and M dual would get it in the first quarter next year.

The Xperia V, J, TX and T meanwhile won't be getting the update at all and no information is available on the updates for the SP and E.

One interesting thing the document mentions is the Xperia Z Google Edition. We have heard about this device in the past but it never really materialized. It's the only device mentioned to get the update in Q3, which sounds about right as had it been a real device it would have gotten the update around that time along with the Nexus and other Google Play edition devices.

The authenticity of this image is not yet confirmed so take the information with a pinch of salt.

Thanks Mustansir, for sending this in.

White Nexus 5 official shot surfaces

Google's Nexus 4 was announced and launched last year in just a single color version - black. The white edition surfaced many times but it didn't go official until May this year.

The Nexus 5 announcement will supposedly happen on October 28 side by side with the Android 4.4 KitKat premiere. We know all there is to know about the smartphone, but until know it has always leaked in black color.

Yesterday we saw a purported white Nexus 5 retail box. It had the smartphone painted with a white back, but with a black front panel.

Today's render image shows a Nexus 5 variant entirely painted in white, not just its back. We are not sure if this is the real deal or not, but it surely looks gorgeous in these snow-white clothes.

Indications are growing stronger that Google will be launching a white Nexus 5 as well. October 28 is just around the corner, so we'll know for sure soon enough.

Sony Xperia Z1S press image leaks

Popular leak-source evleaks has struck again, delivering a photo of the Sony Xperia Z1S, which is allegedly due for announcement this year. There were no details provided, so it's unclear what exactly the Xperia Z1S will be.

Given that the Xperia Z1 went on sale just a few weeks ago, it's seems extremely unlikely that Sony will be releasing a new flagship before the year runs out. So the Xperia Z1S might be the international version of the Sony Xperia Z1 mini, which already broke cover in Japan as the Xperia Z1 f.

Another possible theory is that what we are seeing here is the T-Mobile version of the Sony Xperia Z1. The location of the front-facing camera is different compared to the international Xperia Z1, but perhaps Sony had to shuffle a few internal components around before shipping its smartphone to the States. The name change for the US market is not uncommon either.

Given that all manufacturers are aiming to bring their lineups to the store shelves before the end of November, we'll probably see an official announcement from Sony in the next couple of weeks, solving the mystery. And there's a good chance that more leaks will fill in some of the details in the meantime. We'll keep you posted if we hear anything, so stay tuned!
