China's rumored Lumia 920T has faster processor than US version

Chinese carrier China Mobile reportedly released two new images of China's version of the Nokia Lumia 920, the Lumia 920T, on Friday.

Along with the images came a host of new details on the Lumia 920T's specs , including a claim that the Lumia 920T will have a faster processor than the Lumia 920.

According to the report, the Lumia 920T runs on a Snapdragon S4 Pro MSM8960T with an Adreno 320.

In comparison, the standard MSM8960 (minus the "T") found in the Lumia 920 packs an Adreno 225, making the Chinese Lumia 920T superior, said mobile news site GSM Insider.

Lumia 920 vs. Lumia 920T

Everything else that's known about China's Lumia 920T suggests that, besides the processor, it's identical to the Lumia 920.

That includes a 4.5-inch display with a resolution of 1280x768, according to Friday's report.

The Nokia Lumia 920T launch is expected to take place at a Windows Phone 8 event in China on Dec. 5.

On the other hand, Nokia's Lumia 920 was released in the U.S. on Friday through AT&T for $99.99 with a two-year contract (and in the U.K. on Nov. 2 for £129.99 up front).

Nokia Lumia 920T has Adreno 320 GPU instead of Adreno 225

The Lumia 920, Nokia's flagship Windows Phone 8 handset, is coming to China Mobile (model number 920T). As it turns out the Lumia 920T has a Snapdragon MSM8960T S4 Pro chipset, unlike its international version, which has an MSM8960 S4 Plus chipset. The news comes from the carrier's Sina Weibo page.

The difference is that the MSM8960T chipset features the Adreno 320 GPU and not the Adreno 225 like in the international and US Lumia 920 units. It still has two Krait CPU cores though, this isn't the S4 Pro chipset that's used in the Google Nexus 4.

Still, getting an upgrade on the GPU is great even if you don't get double the CPU cores. The only problem is that most devs will be targeting Adreno 225 as that's what most WP8 phones out there have (Windows Phone handsets don't really have much of a variation in chipsets). It might have a lower power consumption as it won't be as burdened as the 225 using the same graphics.

Could this Nokia Lumia 920T deal mean we'll start seeing Windows Phone 8 handsets with Adreno 320 or is it a one-off? If we do, WP8 will be able to put up a fight in the graphics department against the Android flagships and the iPhone.

Thanks for the tip!

Huawei Ascend Mate could be 6.1-inch giant

Huawei Ascend Mate could be 6.1-inch giant
Do you want to be friends?

A mammoth 6.1-inch smartphone could be in the works over in China, as details of the Huawei Ascend Mate get their first airing.

According to a report from MyDrivers, the super sized device was apparently spotted on Huawei's Chinese website, sporting a huge 6.1-inch, 1080p display which would put the 5.5-inch Samsung Galaxy Note 2 to shame.

As well as the screen size, other details of the monster phone were also leaked, including a 1.8GHz quad-core processor, 2GB of RAM and 4,000mAh battery.

World's most powerful smartphone

If these specs are to be believed then the Ascend Mate is set up to be the world's most powerful smartphone, an accolade currently held by its closest rival, the Galaxy Note 2.

The Ascend Mate will apparently measure a relatively slender 9.9mm in depth, and while there's no official word from Huawei about the device, it wouldn't be a surprise to see other manufacturers take on Samsung's mega-super-phone.

There are no details surrounding a potential Huawei Ascend Mate release date or price, so we've contacted the Chinese firm to see if it can shed any light on the news.

Photos of Nokia Lumia 920 version for China Mobile leak

It looks like Nokia is about land its flagship on the carrier with the largest subscriber base in the world. Images of Nokia 920T for China Mobile have leaked out, showing us a TD-SCDMA version of the Nokia Lumia 920.

There is no information on whether the Nokia 920T will also support China Mobile's soon to be developed LTE network. In any case, LTE on board or not, having its top smartphone available to some many potential users is surely a welcome piece of news for the Finnish company.

Report: China's Huawei considering native OS as fail-safe

Report: China's Huawei considering native OS as fail-safe
Huawei WeeWa. Very nice!

Huawei, the emerging smartphone maker in China, could become a serious challenger in the mobile OS landscape dominated by the United States' iOS, Android, and Windows 8-powered devices.

The telecommunications company told Reuters that it could add its name to the big list of small device OS manufacturers if "other companies won't let us use their system one day."

Huawei is clearly referring to Google and Microsoft in this case. It currently produces phones and tablets that run either Android, like the Huawei Ascend P1, or Windows 8, like the Huawei Ascend W1.

The Samsung vs. Apple lawsuit is cited as one of the reasons Huawei is sinking R&D money into this OS backup plan. Another reason may be Tuesday's report that suggest Google forced Acer to cancel an Alibaba-powered smartphone.

Huawei OS one of many emerging operating systems

A potential Huawei OS may never materialize, but if it does, it could face worldwide competition beyond U.S.-manufactured systems like iOS, Android, and Windows 8.

Canada's RIM is poised to launch BlackBerry 10 in 2013 and the company may go through with plans to open the BlackBerry OS to other phone manufacturers.

In South Korea, Samsung has its own Bada OS on select devices like the Samsung Wave 3 and many see potential in a full-blown Samsung OS. The Samsung vs. Apple lawsuit was a reason cited here, too.

Back in the U.S., everyone's focus is on the big three, but there's another browser heavyweight getting in on the action in a way that directly affects Huawei. Mozilla is teaming up with Huawei Chinese rival ZTE to produce a line of phones running the forthcoming FireFox OS.

Then there's HP, which isn't completely out of the picture with a chance that it may resurrect the long-written-off webOS.

Combine these emerging rivals with the fact that Android, iOS, Blackberry, and Bada all saw growth in the Chinese market last year, and Huawei would have its work cut out for itself.

Nokia Asha 309 leaks, to be launched tomorrow?

The Nokia Asha 306 was announced back in June and launched shortly after. It seems however, it still hasn't reached to China where it's just about to hit the market along with a surprising sibling... an unannounced Nokia Asha 309.

The differences between the Nokia Asha 306 and the new Asha 309 are subtle at best, but still they are obviously two different models. Our best guess is that these two are one and the same model on the inside, just targeted at different carriers.

Nokia Asha 309

These images appeared on the Chinese forums Baidu and were posted alongside images of the Chinese-bound Asha 306. The source claims both of these will launch tomorrow.

Thanks for the tip, Fakhre.

Huawei's first WP8 smartphone to be called W1

Huawei is yet to join the Windows Phone 8 game, after Samsung, Nokia and HTC showcased their WP8 smartphone offerings.

According to the latest rumors coming from China Huawei's first WP8 smartphone will be called the W1. Given that the information comes from no other than Richard Yu (Huawei's Chairman of devices), we have every reason to believe that it's accurate.

The Huawei W1 is rumored to start shipping in November or December in three color versions - black, pink and white. It should cost around $317. The device is rumored to be announced on September 25, but take that with a pinch of salt as Huawei has previously hinted that it will be announcing its WP8 smartphones right before their market release, so it might take another two or three months before the W1 goes official.

There's still no word on the specs of the Huawei W1 but we'll keep an ear on the ground and keep you posted when those become available.

HTC announces One SC, SU and dual-SIM ST for China

HTC unveiled three exclusive droids for China Mobile - the One SC, One SU and the dual-SIM One ST. They all run on Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich skinned with HTC Sense 4.0 UI.

HTC One ST

Let’s start with the one we already met yesterday – the One ST. As it turned out, the previous leak turned out perfectly accurate. The One ST packs a 4.3-inch SuperLCD2 WVGA display and is powered by a 1GHz dual-core processor. The specs sheet continues with 1GB RAM, 4GB storage, 5MP camera (BSI sensor, F2.0, LED flash) with 720p video recording, Beats Audio and a microSD slot.

HTC One ST

The One ST is a dual-SIM phone with support for dual-standby. It also supports 3G with HSPA+ networks but only on the primary SIM card.

HTC One ST will be available in three colors – white, red and black. No word on the pricing and the availability yet.

HTC One SC and One SU

HTC One SC and One SU share identical specifications but different designs. They both have 4.3-inch WVGA displays, 1GHz dual-core processors, 1GB RAM, 4GB storage, 5MP camera (BSI sensor, F2.0, LED flash) with 720p video recording, HSPA+ connectivity, Wi-Fi, GPS, Beats Audio and a microSD slot. Yes, these specs are also identical to the One ST, sans the dual-SIM functionality.

HTC One SC

The One SC has a rather extravagant design, while the One SU is a standard HTC affair.

HTC One SU

The pricing and the availability of the One SU and SC is also TBA.

China-bound dual-SIM HTC One ST leaks ahead of announcement

HTC One ST is a dual-SIM smartphone intended for the China Mobile network. It packs a 4.3-inch WVGA display and runs on a 1GHz dual-core processor.

The rest of the known specs include a 9.25mm thin profile and 115g of weight. Beats Audio enhancement is also on board.

HTC One ST

The One ST is supposed to run on Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich skinned with HTC Sense 4.0 UI.

There is an NY HTC event coming up on September 19, but we guess this fella will be a topic of another announcement. But looking at all these official pictures, it shouldn't take long for it to break cover.

Leaked images reveal iPad Mini rear casing, no NFC chip in iPhone 5

Leaked images reveal iPad Mini rear casing, no NFC chip in iPhone 5
Here's looking at you, case (credit: digi.163.com via AppleInsider)

A separate pair of part leaks out of China are showing off the back shell of the iPad Mini along with the apparent confirmation that the iPhone 5 will not have a near-field communication (NFC) chip as previously rumored.

Photos posted to Chinese website digi.163.com appear to reveal the rear casing for a seven-inch iPad, which we expect Apple to reveal in October.

The bottom of the shell resembles recent leaks for the iPhone 5, including a smaller dock connector, but also reveal a potential rear-facing camera.

Curiously, the headphone jack appears to remain on top of this smaller iPad, despite iPhone 5 leaks showing the same jack relocated to the bottom of the handset.

NFC no-show?

Recent photos showed an unidentified metal square which was initially presumed to be a near-field communication (NFC) chip, which could possibly enable wireless payments through apps such as Passbook, which will be included with the new iOS 6.

On Wednesday, those hopes were dashed with by a new report offering a closer look at the internal components of the sixth-generation iPhone.

The square is now believed to be a bracket used to hold the front-facing FaceTime camera in place, along with the proximity sensor and earpiece speaker.

The same report claims Apple may have chosen to leave NFC out of the new iPhone over security concerns, although this hasn't stopped Android competitors from adding the feature to a number of high-profile devices.
