HTC will hold an event in New York City on November 13

HTC has sent out invitations for an event in New York City, which will take place next Tuesday, November 13. The Taiwanese manufacturer will show off its “latest collaboration” with Verizon Wireless.

Given the recent string of leaks, we can all but confirm that the device scheduled to break cover is the HTC DROID DNA. The upcoming smartphone appears to be a close relative of the Japan exclusive HTC J butterfly. It is bound to pack an eye-catching 5” Super LCD3 display with 1080p resolution and pixel density of 440ppi. Quad-core Snapdragon S4 Pro silicon, 16GB of built-in memory, microSD card, and Sense-d Android 4.1 Jelly Bean are also part of the device’s projected specs.

We are going to be live from the HTC event next week, so we’ll tell you all about the company’s latest creation.

ASUS unviels the Padfone 2 in Taiwan ahead of official launch

Although the official launch of the Padfone 2 will take place later today in Milan, ASUS has already gone ahead and showcased the device(s) in Taiwan.

The new Padfone 2 has a 4.7-inch, 720p Super IPS+ display, Qualcomm APQ8064 quad-core processor, 2GB RAM, 13 megapixel camera with f/2.4 BSI sensor and 1080p30 or 720p60 video recording, NFC and a fixed 2,140mAh battery. The device runs on Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich but a Jelly Bean update is promised in the near future.

On the tablet side, you get a 10.1-inch IPS HD display with a built-in internal battery that has gone down in size from 6,600mAh on the previous model to 5,000mAh on the new model. Because of this, the Padfone 2 weighs 649g with the phone docked in, compared to the 854g of the previous model.

The Padfone 2 will go on sale next week in Taiwan, with prices starting from NT$17,990 for the 16GB model to NT$21,901 for the 64GB model, which includes just the phone. The tablet bundle will cost you back NT$6,000 extra over each model's price. We will have more details once the device gets a proper launch.

Jolla rumored to introduce 'Sailfish' OS, new device in November

Jolla rumored to introduce 'Sailfish' OS, new device in November
Jolla's MeeGo revival could take place this November

Earlier this year, a small collective of former Nokia employees created a company called Jolla and set out to revive the one-and-done MeeGo operating system, which company founders said would help create "the world's best smartphone product."

MeeGo was originally developed collaboratively by Intel, Nokia, and Samsung as a competitor for Apple's iOS and Google's Android.

Back in 2011, Nokia claimed it would support MeeGo for years, though after the sole device to use the OS, the Nokia N9, arrived, the company abandoned MeeGo.

All was not lost for MeeGo, however, because in July of this year, Jolla revealed it would revive the forgotten OS in an effort to continue the work that could contribute to system's success.

"It deserves to be continued, and we will do that together with all the bright and gifted people contributing to the MeeGo success story," Jolla said at the time.

Now, it looks like the company is making good on its promise.

Codename: Sailfish

It's only been a few months, but Jolla may be very close to unveiling its first solo crack at a MeeGo-based OS and device this November.

According to the Wall Street Journal, Jolla has raised €200 million (US$258, AU$252.8, US£160) during initial funding rounds.

Little is known about any device at the moment, but Jolla's new OS comes under the codename Sailfish, and will reportedly continue as an open source platform, a la Tizen.

With reports that several Windows Phone 8 devices are launching in November, including Nokia's own Lumia 920, Jolla may find itself facing some stiff competition on store shelves, especially if it really is introducing an entirely (almost) new OS on the market.

And that's without even considering the continual powerhouse sales of Samsung's Galaxy S3 or Apple's iPhone 5.

Until Jolla actually has something concrete to show off though, we'll reserve further judgment, and hope that the enthusiasm of the development team is enough to make a difference.

Microsoft freebies: Ballmer to give all employees free Surface tablet, PC and phone

Microsoft Surface Tablet display screen apple ipad killer

Microsoft's giving all 90,000+ of its workers a bunch of free stuff, including its soon-to-launch Surface tablet.

Microsoft’s annual employee bash took place in Seattle this week, an event off-limits to the media and public. With Steve Ballmer at the helm, the gathering usually involves a spot of perspiration, speeches from various Microsoft executives and, this year, free stuff.

All 90,000+ full-time employees of the Redmond-based computer company are set to receive not one, not even two, but three lots of free goodies, according to a Forbes report.

Ballmer promised his army of workers an RT Surface tablet, a Windows 8 PC and a Windows Phone 8 device. While workers will be free to use the tablet and phone at home and for work, the PC is for work only.

The report said some employees posted messages on Twitter and Facebook expressing their delight at their boss’s announcement, with one describing it as the “Best. Company meeting. Ever.”

It’s a generous giveaway, for sure, but it’s also designed to get Microsoft employees up and running with its new products and next-generation OS, scheduled for launch next month.

Microsoft will also want to get its workers familiar with its new Surface tablet, and hopefully singing its praises to anyone who’ll listen. The Surface marks the computer giant’s entry into the tablet market, already crammed with competitors, and dominated by Apple with its mass-selling iPad.

The Surface has a 10.6-inch display with a 16:9 aspect ratio and comes with a Touch Cover keyboard. The tablet comprises two models, one running Windows 8 Pro and a more basic version running Windows RT.

The RT model will hit stores at the end of next month while the Surface Pro isn’t expected to be available until early 2013.

Apple's iPhone 5 event live coverage

The Apple event is underway and the star of the show will be the new iPhone, though we expect to see a couple of new iPods as well. Here's the place where we'll be uploading the new info as soon as it becomes available, so make sure to keep an eye on this space.

Apple doesn't do live streaming, unfortunately, so we can't just embed a live video stream from the event as we usually do. Those Cupertino guy sure like being mysterious, don't they?

We've all seen the many leaked photos of various components, even whole prototypes, heard about what features the iPhone 5 will or won't have, now we're just waiting for Tim Cook to take the stage and put an end to the guesswork.

And Tim Cook is on stage!

He took some time to give us the statistics on Mac and Mountain Lion - there have been 7 million updates to Mountain Lion, Mac market share is up 27% in July.

iPads are on the rise too - 17 million were sold this quarter, bringing the total to 84 million.

Everything Everywhere announces UK's first 4G network

Everything Everywhere announces UK's first 4G network
EE is the new place for 4G

Everything Everywhere has announced the UK's first 4G network today, ushering in a new era in mobile browsing and data on the go.

At a special event held at the Science Museum in London, with TechRadar in attendance, the Orange and T-Mobile partnership officially unveiled its 4G network under the new brand of EE.

EE will stand alongside the 3G networks of Orange and T-Mobile, with the aim of supplying customers with super-fast 4G and fibre broadband.

Simpler and faster

EE CEO Olaf Swantee said: "Today is the day we share our plans to build a new digital communication service for the UK – 4G".

EE's 4G network will launch in a few weeks, so you'll be able to surf the super-fast network in time for Christmas.

Everything Everywhere has already created a Twitter account for EE, where it is revealing more information about the new 4G service - including what areas will be covered and what devices will be 4G ready.

According to EE, the first places to get 4G connectivity will be: Belfast, Birmingham, Bristol, Cardiff, Derby, Edinburgh, Glasgow, Hull, Leeds, Liverpool, London, Manchester, Nottingham, Newcastle, Sheffield and Southampton.

All of these towns will have 4G by Christmas - today London, Cardiff, Birmingham and Bristol are being used for engineering testing.

EE will be hoping to offer 70 per cent of of the population 4G by Christmas 2012, with 98 per cent 4G coverage to the UK by 2014.

The devices to get 4G are: the Nokia Lumia 920 and 820, Samsung Galaxy S3 (4G version) and the Huawei Ascend P1. There will be two Huawei dongles available as well for laptops and PCs.

EE also hinted more devices to some, with Swantee saying: "We'll be offering handsets from Samsung, HTC and Huawei and... one more thing... other firms soon."

Oh, EE, you massive iPhone 5 tease.

This new startup wants to inject some Ooomf into the App Store

Ooomf launches its app discovery and creation platform, a place to participate and curate app products and collections. Take that, App Store.

home page Ooomf

The app market has become a very important one, and it comes down to numbers: As of May, 50.4 percent of Americans used smartphones, according to a Nielson report; we’re seeing new statistics on how they invade our personal lives; both the Google Play Marketplace and iOS App Store are well beyond the 20 billion download mark at this point; and, perhaps most telling, using a smartphone to make a call comes in as the fifth most popular function — most of it is spent using apps.

Suffice it to say that apps are big business.

Singular app developers aren’t the only ones who’ve noticed the trend, and a new wave of app creation and management platforms are hitting the scene to help with monetization as well. And that includes newly launched Canadian import, Ooomf.

The Montreal-based Ooomf began as a Startup Weekend pitch that pivoted during the team’s time in an accelerator program. “We had two major evolutions,” founder Mikael Cho tells me. “The first idea was to help people market their products online with influencers, and we saw that what we were doing with that was incremental, and not a big change. We had feedback from our users and we started thinking about our backgrounds in user experience and design and marketing, and thinking about the problems we could really solve there. So we started thinking about mobile and we saw that our expertise really aligned with mobile.”

The other piece of Ooomf’s evolution was nailing down the specifics of how it would help app developers. So for starters, the service creates a Website for its users. “One of the things they had to do in getting their app out there was make a site, because Apple requires it,” says Cho. “And we were like “oh, okay, right away, we’ll do that for you.’” He describes the process as incredibly simple — we’re talking Tumblr simple, people — and says it takes less than a minute to have your app’s Web landing page up and running. Sure, it’s a little thing, but it’s an effective one; the caliber of an app’s proprietary page is sort of like a book cover — we’re not supposed to judge it, but lots of us most certainly do.

As the team has refined the product, it’s added a community element to Ooomf. “We allow people to participate in the creation of an app,” says Cho. “So if you have an idea or a prototype or a design, you can put it on Ooomf and let the community vote on features and participate in it.” Crowdsourcing leaves no stone untouched, and that’s quickly including app creation. There are a handful of companies pre and post-launch who are doing this exact thing, though using a variety of mechanisms to encourage audience participation. But the idea remains the same: Everyone has an app idea, and this is a place to put them.

The other beast of a problem Ooomf is tackling is app discovery. If you haven’t noticed, the consumer and developer world largely hates the App Store’s feeble attempts at showcasing apps and helping us find new ones. In addition to supporting and participating in app creation, users can also make their own curated app catalogs. “You identify as a creative, or a traveling nomad, or a hustling innovator, and we have different apps in each category,” Cho tells me. “But the entire idea is to be a part of the whole life cycle of an app, from idea to creation.” Ooomf also offers a “Coming Soon” category to help with discovery of upcoming apps — something that developers fear in the App Store: If you don’t crack the top on your debut day, you can sink fast and furiously.

Ooomf collections viewApple’s lack of App Store discovery upgrades has been a boon to teams like Ooomf: It’s basically ceded an entire platform to outsiders. Of course, we now have word that Apple is about to flip a switch and turn Genius on for the App Store, and that some of that Chomp acquisition will finally be making its debut. I asked Cho if there’s any fear on Ooomf’s part about this, and he seems to feel the way that I do about it: Too little, too late. He also mentions that Apple’s App Store algorithms still allow the Ooomf team to offer something useful.

At the moment, everything on Ooomf is free, and will remain so for pure users. Cho says that within the year, paid-for features will be introduced on the developer-side and it will either be based on the number of apps someone is making or the numbers of things they use Ooomf to help them do. He also talks about working with developers on incentivizing user participation — like offering people early beta testing or future discounts on in-app purchases if they were there from day one.

Clearly, Ooomf’s strategy is to give developers a stage — which is surprisingly becoming tricky territory these days. “I definitely think it’s important to really cater to developers. You’ve seen with Twitter the massive growth that occurred because, yes, there were users, but because every developer was building a Twitter client or something for the application,” Cho says. “There was so much open data and Twitter was able to grow massively because of that.”
“Eventually, we’ll have our own data and open our own API, and we’ll use the App.net approach.”

Today, Ooomf is available via Web and also has optimized its site for mobile. The iOS app will launch this November.
