1080p Droid DNA tipped for launch at Verizon and HTC’s November 13 event

HTC and Verizon have sent out invitations to a press event on November 13, where it's rumored to be announcing the Droid DNA, the US version of Japan's J Butterfly smartphone that's equipped with a 5-inch, 1080p display.

Phone fans could be in for a treat next week, as HTC and Verizon have sent out invitations to a press event to be held in New York on November 13, where we could get the first 1080p smartphone/tablet hybrid launched outside Japan.

The invite doesn’t appear to contain any hidden messages, showing nothing more than a lens-flared light on a dark background, but a few leaked press pictures could give us a better idea what these long-time partners are preparing for us.

The images popped up on @evleaks’ Twitter account this week, and show a big-screen, Verizon-branded HTC smartphone that bears a striking resemblance to the HTC J Butterfly.

Quite how such a bizarrely named phone could slip you memory, we’re not sure; but just in case it has, here’s what it’s all about. Announced last month in Japan, the J Butterfly has a 5-inch display with a headline-grabbing 1080p resolution. It seemed inevitable that HTC would let the Butterfly spread its wings at some point, and the Verizon event seems like the ideal launchpad.

Five-inch, full HD touchscreens are set to be the next big thing in the world of the smartphone display, with Sharp’s 1080p IGZO screen making its debut this week, and LG confirming recently that it’s also working on a similar panel.

It’s highly unlikely the J Butterfly name will remain on the US version though, and instead it’s likely to be another “Droid” device, this time the Droid DNA. That name has appeared on both the FCC’s website and a leaked Verizon price list, and has superseded other possible names including the HTC DLX and the HTC X5. Neither of those names are dead though, and could be used for a GSM version of the phone.

If the 5-inch, 1080p screen isn’t enough to get your pulse racing, then should the Droid DNA share the J Butterfly’s other features, it will also have Qualcomm’s high performance, 1.5GHz, quad-core Snapdragon S4 Pro processor, plus Android 4.1 Jelly Bean as its operating system.

Previous leaks have suggested a December 6 release date for the phone, but we’ll have to wait for the November 13 event to confirm this, and all the other details concerning HTC and Verizon’s new device.

Samsung Galaxy Camera goes on sale in the UK in two days

The Samsung Galaxy Camera drew a lot of attention when it was announced though launch date and pricing details were a bit slim. Samsung put out a press release today, saying the camera will be in the UK stores in a couple of days.

The Samsung Brand Store will get in on November 7, while other stores will get it the next day. The other stores are Carphone Warehouse, Phones4U and Jessops. Both brick-and-mortar and online stores will be selling the camera.

Jessops already have the Galaxy Camera on pre-order (in black and white) and are asking £400 for it ($640, €500) with a free 8GB SanDisk microSD to complement the 8GB of built-in storage.

Carphone Warehouse and Phones4U still haven’t put up the Camera up on their sites and Jessops only offers it through their online site (no in-store pickups yet).

By the way, a Samsung NX1000 EVIL camera with 20-50mm lens goes for £380 in the same store, so you should consider how important it is for you to have an Android powered camera.

Just so we're clear, it's an Android 4.1 Jelly Bean-powered camera with the internals of the Galaxy S III (including the quad-core CPU at 1.4GHz and 4.8" Super Clear LCD with 720p resolution) packed inside a point-and-shoot camera body (1/2.3 sensor" 16MP BSI sensor, 23mm wide-angle lens and 21x optical zoom).

By the way, the Samsung Galaxy Camera has 3G and 4G LTE connectivity, though that's for data only.

The Galaxy S3 Mini could be priced to fail

The Samsung Galaxy S3 Mini release date and price have been confirmed by a press release sent out by a high street retailer.

Over the weekend Carphone Warehouse released information on the Galaxy S3 Mini, confirming that you'll be able to pick up the handset for free on two year contracts starting at £25 per month.

According to Carphone's website the Galaxy S3 Mini will be available on O2, Orange and Vodafone, but if you don't fancy being tied to one of those networks the retailer is also offering the handset SIM-free for £299.95.

Stiff competition

We had high hopes for the Samsung Galaxy S3 Mini, but when it was finally announced the specs were far from blockbuster. The smartphone sports a non-HD 4-inch Super AMOLED display, 1GHz dual-core processor and 5MP rear camera.

Considering the recently-announced Google Nexus 4 will costs £239 for 8GB and £279 for the 16GB version and packs a 4.7-inch 768x1280 display, quad-core processor, 2GB of RAM, 8MP camera and Android 4.2 we wonder why you'd want the Samsung.

According to the Carphone Warehouse listing, the Samsung Galaxy S3 Mini release date is set for November 9, however we're taking this with a pinch of salt as Phones4U originally had November 2 as its delivery date – which was obviously incorrect.

HTC One X gets Android 4.1.2 In Asia today, One S to follow soon

The General manager of HTC North Asia, Jack Tong announced at a press event that the Android 4.1.2 Jelly Bean update will start rolling out for the One X today. He also said that the One S will also be graced with the firmware update, but didn't specify a time frame.

The new firmware update will not only bring the One X to the latest Android release (not counting Monday's Google announcement, of course), as well as the latest Sense UI version.

Jack Tong also mentioned the One X+ and One S SE updated edition, which will hit shelves in Asia on October 30. No other markets were mentioned, but we recon they shouldn't be too far behind the schedule.

Behold! The Microsoft Surface skateboard

During its Surface press conference today, Microsoft showed off the most capable tablet ever made. The new Surface is actually a skateboard.

Today, Microsoft unveiled one of the most expensive skateboards ever made. After demonstrating the durability of the Surface tablet by dropping it on stage (onto carpeted floor, might we add), Microsoft’s Panos Panay showed us another way he and Windows 8 chief Steven Sinofsky have been testing the durability of the new magnesium-encased tablet. The team pasted skateboard trucks onto a regular Surface and converted it into a skateboard. A skateboard! Though they didn’t do any kickflips or ollies on stage, we did see a picture of Sinofsky sporting a massive helmet standing on the homemade sports equipment. For some reason, it didn’t seem too crazy that tablets can become laptops, and since laptops have learned Yoga, why can’t a Surface become a deck?

No, you can’t buy a Surface skateboard, but we wish you could. It could be one hell of an optional accessory. Maybe the trucks could attach with industrial grade magnets like the TouchCover. And you don’t have to worry about falling after a tough grind either. The Surface can hit the ground in 72 different ways without breaking, or so we learned today. Actually, after three hours of Microsoft press conferences, this might have been the only thing we actually learned. But… skateboard! That’s hip, right?

Somebody should call Tony Hawk. He may have found the next great way to make a skateboarding game.

Google announces Android event on October 29

Nexus launches coming at Android event?

Google has sent out press invites to an unspecified Android event on October 29 in New York.

Following recent speculation, the event is likely to showcase the next Nexus smartphone, which is widely thought to be the often-leaked LG Nexus 4.

Reports have also suggested HTC has been working on a 'Nexus 5' phablet, while Google-branded Sony and Samsung devices have also been mooted.

Multiple devices launches would not be a huge surprise, following widespread reports that Google intends to break from tradition and work with multiple manufacturing partners for the next Nexus launch.

There has also been widespread talk of a 32GB version of the Google Nexus 7 tablet as well as a 10-inch Nexus 10.

Live-streamed for the masses

The event is also likely to bring news on Android 4.1 Jelly Bean updates, so it would be a major surprise if there were any mention of the forthcoming Android 5.0 Key Lime Pie OS just yet.

The invitation itself features the Google search bar widget from Android filled with the cryptic message 'The playground is open.' Behind it, and the company logo is image of the New York City skyline.

The press conference will take place at 10am ET (That's 3pm UK time) and will also be live-streamed for the masses at YouTube.com/Android.

Nokia Lumia 822 for Verizon emerges in live photos

Following the press photo leak from a couple of days back, the Verizon bound Nokia smartphone has emerged in live photos. Dubbed Nokia Lumia 822, the Windows Phone 8 smartphone is (just like the Nokia Lumia 810) yet another carrier specific version of the Lumia 820.

The specs of the Nokia Lumia 822 are quite similar to the 820's, save for the presence of Verizon 4G LTE bands and the matte finish. They include a dual-core CPU, WVGA display, and 8MP camera.

The Nokia Lumia 822 is expected to go official for Verizon any day now, so we'll be sure to keep a close eye on it.

Links to Apple Maps are redirecting users to Google Maps on the web

Apple Maps haven't taken over yet, seems like it's still sending traffic to Google's system.

As if Apple needed any more negative press around its iOS 6 mapping system, TechCrunch has uncovered another oddity in the application. Apparently, rather than diverting attention away from Google Maps as planned, Apple Maps is sending users into Google’s open arms.

The quirk is as follows: when an Apple user shares their location the link redirects to Google Maps if it is opened on a desktop, Android, or any phone not running iOS 6. This most recent slip up is even more proof that Apple let this particular product out of the bag much too soon.

Seemingly stemming from Apple’s lack of an actual online home for its maps, links shared from an iDevice lead only to Google. The problem isn’t linked to any particular social network either. Apple Maps locations shared through Facebook and Twitter both open up the address in Google Maps when on desktop, even though the URL wrapper is listed as maps.apple.com. Since Google Maps was, and still is, the default application in iOS 5 and prior versions, this issue seems to only apply to iOS 6 users.

It gets even weirder too, the people at TechCrunch found that Twitter shares from iOS 6 lead to Apple Maps on mobile, but the same link opened in Facebook redirects to Google Maps. And if you try to share your location using email or iMessage, Apple sends a VCard along with a maps.apple.com web address. The same URL is embedded within the VCard and on iOS 6 it opens Apple Maps, but using anything else you’ll get Google once again.

There’s more to report as well, a location shared with an Android device via text or email includes the same VCard and Apple URL, but still sends the user to Google Maps. We dare you to solve that logic.

And all of this comes after a huge amount of bugs and defects in Apple Maps were spread around the web with more being snapped every day. Our own Molly McHugh put together a list of Apple’s “wrong turns” in its maps endeavor. For instance, there is no public transit option in the new application. Clicking the bus icon simply sends you to the app store and suggests a replacement. Simple searches for Canada, Mexico, and Australia yield no results. Street view most definitely trumps 3D-flyover and Apple just can’t compete with Google’s level of detail.

HTC's upcoming 5" smartphone emerges in an alleged press shot

With its likely unveiling less than 48 hours away, an alleged press shot of HTC's long rumored 5" smartphone has emerged. When official, the Taiwanese Android powerhouse will likely be called HTC One X 5.

The rumored specs of the HTC One X 5 include a quad-core Snapdragon S4 Pro chipset and a 1080p display. If this is the case, the handset will easily top the current crop of Android top dogs.

The device in the press shot also looks a lot like the one which leaked out in a blurry image a couple of weeks back.

iTunes getting major revamp this October

Big changes are on the way for iTunes

Though Apple's iPhone 5 and iOS 6 will be getting most of the attention from today's press conference, they weren't the only stars of the show.

Apple also introduced a major revamp to their iTunes service, set to arrive in late October for Mac and PC clients.

The latest updates to what Apple called "the world's most popular media player" will incorporate plenty of cosmetic and interface changes, as well as a few new tricks to make the existing package even more impressive.

iCloud improvements

With more than 200 million people using iTunes on the Cloud, it should come as no surprise that Apple will be including better iCloud integration when the update arrives.

No matter where you bought your music, movies, or books on iTunes, iCloud will seamlessly incorporate that purchase into all of your libraries.

More importantly, you will now be able to continue watching or listening to movies and music exactly where you left off, and you'll be able to resume playing your media on any device with iTunes.

Cosmetic changes

Once the October update arrives, iTunes will be ditching the sidebars in favor of a full-window interface.

The new grid-style view for your library will allow you to see everything you have in a specific category, be it movies, music, TV shows, or books.

Clicking on an album will let expand the screen to show you a track listing, all the while keeping the rest of your library in plain sight for continued exploration.

There's also an all new MiniPlayer, which will give users the ability to listen to and search for new songs without having to open their entire library.

Additionally, iTunes will add Up Next, which will offer improved insight into what songs are coming up in the playlist, and will allow you to change your queue without much fuss.

iTunes on iOS

Apple iPhone 5 unveiled (updating live)

At its much anticipated press event in San Francisco, Apple has revealed the iPhone 5.

Apple has announced the iPhone 5 during its highly anticipated press conference at the Yerba Buena Center for the Arts in San Francisco. Apple’s Phil Schiller took the wraps off the next generation smartphone to huge applause from those gathered in the auditorium, so here’s everything we know so far about the brand-new Apple iPhone 5.

Schiller described the new device as “a jewel,” and the “most beautiful product we’ve ever made.” As expected, it has a 4-inch touchscreen with a 1136 x 640 pixel Retina-quality resolution, while the design is identical to those we’ve seen leaked over the past months.

Billed as the “world’s most advanced display,” Apple has removed a layer from the screen and incorporated the touch sensors into the display itself.

The body is made from glass and aluminum, and weighs just 112 grams. It’s also 18-percent thinner than the iPhone 4 and 4S.

Inside hides a new A6 processor, which is 22-percent smaller and twice as fast as the A5 in the 4S, as well as providing twice the graphics performance too.

The iPhone 5 also supports LTE bands, using a single chip for voice and data, and a single chip for the radio too. Like Amazon’s Kindle Fire HD, the iPhone 5 has been equipped with dual-band Wi-Fi at 2.4Ghz and 5Ghz, plus 802.11a/b/g/n.

iPhone 5 tidbits leak: LTE, iTunes 11, new iPods confirmed

Crafty Apple fans have found links on Apple.com search that appear to confirm the iPhone 5, iTunes 11, 4G LTE, and new iPods.

Apple’s big fall press conference is less than two hours away (10am PST), but that doesn’t mean the Internet is prepared to wait. Small “confirmations” of existing rumors are popping up all over the Web. Do not take this information as fact just yet, but it’s looking highly likely that the new iPhone will indeed be called the iPhone 5, it will have 4G LTE connectivity, a new iPod Touch is coming, a new iPod Nano is coming, and iTunes 11 may also be announced.

Most of this information comes from 9to5Mac, which has done some rather sleuthy searching on Apple.com’s website. We’ve verified that if you search for “iPhone-5″ on Apple’s site, a link to what appears to be a forthcoming press release appears in the search results. However, when you attempt to click on any of the articles, they return a 404 error, which could mean that they just aren’t live yet or that they aren’t real articles to begin with — it’s possible that they were placeholders for an iPhone that never came to be. However, it’s more likely that this phone will be called iPhone 5. The press invitations Apple sent out for this event had a giant “5″ in them — a pretty strong hint that Apple isn’t planning to get crafty with its naming scheme.  

Similar searches on Apple.com seem to prove other rumors:

• New iPods are coming as well, according to searches, which makes sense as Apple announced iPod updates with the iPhone 4S. Earlier this morning, we posted a new rumor that the iPod Touch will get a FaceTime camera, GPS, and new colors. It’s likely that the other iPods will be updated as well.
• iTunes 11 may be shown. Supposedly, it’s a pretty big overhaul of iTunes. Perhaps Apple is finally going to use Lala?
• 4G LTE connectivity is also hinted at in search results.

The HTC One X+ and the HTC 8X leak online

HTC is holding a press event on September 19, but it seems it couldn’t keep the curtain over the TBA phones.

The Twitter user Football4PDA (obviously a reputable XDA dev) spilled the beans on the HTC’s next flagships.

The first one is the Android 4.1 Jelly Bean-running One X+. The smartphone is based on the latest quad-core Tegra 3 AP37 chipset with a quad-core 1.6GHz processor, which is capable of running at 1.7GHz in single core mode.

The rest of the specs include 1GB of RAM, 32GB internal storage, 134.36 x 69.9 x 9.3 mm measurements and 129g of weight. Those measurements are pretty good indications for a 5-inch or so HD (or more) display. HTC Sense 4.5 UI is expected to run on top of Android Jelly Bean.

The next revealed device is the HTC 8X (C620a model name), based on Windows Phone 8. The phone packs a 4.3-inch HD display and runs on a 1.2GHz dual-core processor (Krait, perhaps). Other notable features are the 1 gig of RAM; the 16 gigs of internal storage; the 8MP camera with 28mm wide angle lens and bright, F2.0 aperture and 1080p video recording; and “ultra-wide angle” front camera; NFC and Beats Audio.

There is an asterisk next to the 16GB storage, which either indicates the presence of a microSD slot, or HTC will promote the 7GB SkyDrive cloud storage.

We guess the event on September 19 will be all about those two fellas.

Report: Amazon smartphone ‘confirmed’, may be unveiled at Thursday’s event

Amazon is reportedly planning to unveil its first smartphone at Thursday's press event in Santa Monica.

There have been rumors swirling around for some time now about the possibility of an Amazon smartphone coming to market. A report from The Verge suggests it is going to happen, and that it may even be unveiled at Amazon’s press event in Santa Monica on Thursday.

The report obtained its information from “multiple sources”, adding that the handset would run “a variant of the Kindle Fire’s Android-based operating system.” Other than that, few details are known about the device.

The phone is reportedly not yet finished, though it appears this won’t stop it from being presented to the press at Thursday’s event.

Chatter surrounding the possibility of Amazon readying itself for the smartphone market increased significantly a couple of months back when reports surfaced claiming the e-commerce giant was “working with component suppliers in Asia to test the smartphone.” Foxconn is rumored to be manufacturing the phone at its plants in China.

As with its Kindle Fire tablet, any such handset from Amazon will likely be placed at the low end of the market, sold at cost, or possibly at a loss, in order to boost sales of the device and push people towards its well-stocked online store.

It’s set to be a busy day for Amazon tomorrow. The Seattle-based company is widely expected to launch the second iteration of its 7-inch Kindle Fire tablet at the media gathering, possibly together with a cut-price Fire with ads. An updated Kindle Touch e-reader, or possibly a brand new ‘Paperwhite’ e-reader, is also thought to be on the way.

Apple is expected to debut the sixth-generation iPhone, commonly referred to as the “iPhone 5,” at the Sept. 12 event, which was first reported by iMore on July 30. The new iPhone will reportedly go on shelves on September 21, nine days after the event. That rumor is based on the fact that Verizon Wireless retail sales staff are forbidden from taking vacation from Sept. 21 through Sept. 30.

While the text of the invitation provides little hint as to what Apple will announce next week, a closer look shows a clear “5″ in the shadow of the “12,” a blatant indication that the so-called iPhone 5 will be announced at the event — and, much to our surprise, a hint that it might indeed be called “iPhone 5.”

The new iPhone — whatever it may be called — will reportedly sport a larger, 4-inch touchscreen, and a new 8-pin dock connector. Leaked photos and video show that the speaker and microphone grills have also been updated, and the headphone jack has been moved to the bottom of the device. Whether the leaked iPhone 5 and the real iPhone 5 are one in the same, well, we’ll just have to wait until next week to find out.

Apple is also expected to hold a second event in October during which it will reveal the long-rumored iPad Mini, a smaller version of the world’s most popular tablet that has a 7.85-inch screen, as opposed to the 9.7-inch screen of the first three generations of iPads.
