Surprise Samsung Ativ S release date revealed

Surprise Samsung Ativ S release date revealed
Samsung Windows devices, coming soon...

The Samsung Ativ S and Samsung Ativ Tab could both be in stock before the month is out, according to one online retailer.

First to touch down in the UK will apparently be the Ativ S smartphone, with Expansys claiming it will receive stock of the Windows Phone 8 device in two days' time - November 21.

If you have a hankering for a Windows tablet, then Samsung's offering could be less than two weeks away, with an Ativ Tab release date pegged for November 28.

As sure as we can be

We asked Expansys how sure it was of the dates and a spokesperson told TechRadar: "Those are the dates that have just been given to us by our Samsung distributor - so as sure as we can be."

We've already seen the Nokia Lumia 920 and HTC 8X smartphones hit shelves in the UK, with both handsets offering up a different experience to what you find on the iOS and Android handsets also on the market.

The Windows 8 tablet market, like its smartphone platform, is still in its early phases with only a handful or tablets currently on sale, most noticeably the Microsoft Surface.

We hope to get both devices in soon, so keep an eye out for our in-depth Samsung Ativ S review and Samsung Ativ Tab review.

Samsung Galaxy S3 Mini UK release date and price revealed

Samsung Galaxy S3 Mini UK release date and price revealed
The Galaxy S3 Mini could be priced to fail

The Samsung Galaxy S3 Mini release date and price have been confirmed by a press release sent out by a high street retailer.

Over the weekend Carphone Warehouse released information on the Galaxy S3 Mini, confirming that you'll be able to pick up the handset for free on two year contracts starting at £25 per month.

According to Carphone's website the Galaxy S3 Mini will be available on O2, Orange and Vodafone, but if you don't fancy being tied to one of those networks the retailer is also offering the handset SIM-free for £299.95.

Stiff competition

We had high hopes for the Samsung Galaxy S3 Mini, but when it was finally announced the specs were far from blockbuster. The smartphone sports a non-HD 4-inch Super AMOLED display, 1GHz dual-core processor and 5MP rear camera.

Considering the recently-announced Google Nexus 4 will costs £239 for 8GB and £279 for the 16GB version and packs a 4.7-inch 768x1280 display, quad-core processor, 2GB of RAM, 8MP camera and Android 4.2 we wonder why you'd want the Samsung.

According to the Carphone Warehouse listing, the Samsung Galaxy S3 Mini release date is set for November 9, however we're taking this with a pinch of salt as Phones4U originally had November 2 as its delivery date – which was obviously incorrect.

LG Nexus 4 SIM-free price and colour options possibly revealed

LG Nexus 4 SIM-free price and colour options possibly revealed
Info leaked left, right and centre

According to a retailer's listing, the upcoming LG Nexus 4 will be available for £389.95 SIM-free in two colour options.

UK retailer Carphone Warehouse looks to be at it again, after listing the Nexus 4 complete with specs on its website yesterday, today there's a screen shot claiming to be from the firm's internal system revealing for details.

According to the snapped screen you'll be able to pick up the LG Nexus 4 in either black or white, for just under £400 (around $645 or AU$625).

Dubious source

The image was tweeted to the guys over at MoDaCo and while the system looks relatively kosher there's no guarantee that it's the real deal.

At just under £400 the LG Nexus 4 would be reasonably priced for a quad-core handset, however this price is always subject to change.

All will be revealed on October 29, when Google takes to the stage in New York where we expect it to uncover the new Nexus smartphone, possible alongside new Nexus 7 tablets and a larger Nexus 10 slate.

UK retailer jumps the gun, puts Nexus 4 up for pre-order

Carphone Warehouse Nexus 4

The Nexus 4 has been made available as a pre-order on a UK phone retailer's website, despite not being officially announced yet. Google is expected to launch the phone on October 29, when it could be joined by several other new devices too.

The Nexus 4 has to be one of the most leaked smartphones of the year, and even now, just a few days before the event where it’s expected to be officially unveiled, it gets leaked again — this time by a retailer in the UK.

Carphone Warehouse, an established and popular high street mobile phone shop, has put the Nexus 4 up for pre-order on its website, with a delivery date of October 30, the day after Google’s event.

It provides just about all the specification details we could want, starting with confirmation of the 4.7-inch display with a 1280 x 768 pixel resolution and a pixel density of 320ppi, plus a quad-core, 1.5GHz Snapdragon S4 processor, which can also be found in the LG Optimus G and the Asus PadFone 2.

The operating system is listed as both Android 4.2 and Android 4.1.2, depending on where you take the information from on the site. These are two different things, as 4.1.2 has already been seeded to the Nexus 7, Galaxy Nexus and Nexus S, bringing with it only a few changes.Nexus 4 Android 4.1

Android 4.2 is listed separately, and several new software features that may or may not be related are talked about in the description, including a 360-degree photo mode and Gesture Typing, which sounds a lot like Swype.

Continuing to explore the feature list, we find an 8-megapixel camera with 1080p video recording, 2GB of RAM, NFC, a forward facing video call lens and GPS. Although no weight is mentioned, the Nexus 4 is 9.1mm thick.

Finally, the phone is shown to have just 8GB of internal memory and no microSD card slot, the combination of which could be a deal-breaker for many potential owners.

No SIM-free price is given, although it’s available with either O2 or Vodafone from £31 per month, when the device itself will be free. LG’s name isn’t mentioned either, however the company is the only one listed under the “alternative phones” list.

It’s now almost certain the Nexus 4 will be officially announced on October 29, but the question is, what else has Google planned for us?

Nexus 4 release date and specs revealed by online retailer

Nexus 4 release date and specs revealed by online retailer
Oops, this could be a bit embarrassing

A UK retailer has managed to reveal details of the rumoured LG Nexus 4 on a pre-order page on its site for the next Google smartphone.

The page on Carphone Warehouse shows a press image of the handset and pegs with Nexus 4 release date as October 30, with the handset available for free on contracts starting at £31 per month over two years.

Both Vodafone and O2 are listed as available networks, and there's a whole range of tariffs for both networks on the site.

Processor, screen and camera detailed

As well as a Nexus 4 release date and price, the listing also goes on to reveal more information about the handset, including the 1.5Ghz quad-core Snapdragon S4 processor, 2GB of RAM, 4.7-inch HD LCD (1280x768) display with a 320ppi pixel density, plus an 8MP rear facing camera capable of recording 1080p video and taking 360 degree panorama pictures.

It also shows the Nexus 4 will come running the latest version of Google's operating system, Android 4.2 Jelly Bean.

Connectivity wise the Nexus 4 looks to be fully loaded, with 3G, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, A-GPS, USB and NFC all on board, but apparently there's only a paltry 8GB of internal storage and no microSD slot.

Although the pre-order listing doesn't explicitly say the handset is manufactured by LG, there's a link on the page under the title "Alternative phones" which reads "View all LG Electronics phones", plus LG features in the page URL - which shows, once again, the Korean firm is behind the Nexus 4.

We still haven't heard anything official from Google, and Carphone Warehouse has published per-order pages in the past based on rumoured specifications, so we're not taking this a gospel, but it all looks pretty convinving.

Samsung Galaxy S3 Mini UK release date revealed

Samsung Galaxy S3 Mini UK release date revealed
First batch set to arrive November 8

The Samsung Galaxy S3 Mini release date has been confirmed as November 8 by online retailer Expansys.

Apparently the November 8 Galaxy S3 Mini release date has been confirmed by the website's suppliers, but it's worth noting this is just for the 8GB white version.

If you fancy getting your hands on the pebble blue Samsung Galaxy S3 Mini you'll need to wait until "around November 23".

Bigger storage option

The Galaxy S3 Mini will also come in a 16GB variant, but there's currently no word on when we may expect to see this land in the UK.

While it may carry the same name as the Samsung Galaxy S3 superphone, the Mini doesn't quite meet the same high standards of its bigger brother, offering up a 4-inch Super AMOLED display, 1GHz dual-core processor, 1GB of RAM and 5MP rear camera, but it does come running Android 4.1.

Expansys is listing the Samsung Galaxy S3 Mini at £314.99, but if you shop around you may be able to pick it up for around £300 SIM-free, and it will also be available for free on contracts starting at £25 per month.

Find out more information in our Samsung Galaxy S3 Mini release date: when will you get it article.

Samsung Ativ S price revealed in pre-order listing

Samsung Ativ S price revealed in pre-order listing
Will this be your WP8 weapon of choice?

The first pre-order page for the Samsung Ativ S has popped up in the UK, with the online retailer asking for £479.99 (around $770/AU$750) in return for the Korean firm's flagship Windows Phone 8 smartphone.

Unveiled at IFA 2012 in Berlin, the Ativ S joins the likes of the HTC Windows Phone 8X and Nokia Lumia 920 at the top of Microsoft's new pile of handsets.

Online retailer Handtec has the Ativ S listed on its site for pre-order, and as well as being upfront about the potential price of Samsung's handset, it also reckons stock will arrive in the first week of November.

Bang for you buck?

Now that's a pretty safe bet, as we expect all the Windows Phone 8 smartphones to go on sale around this time, but back to that £479.99 price tag – is it worth it?

Well for your money you'll be getting a huge 4.8-inch, 720p Super AMOLED HD – which is the same size as you find on the Samsung Galaxy S3.

Under the hood you'll find a 1.5GHz dual-core processor, 1GB of RAM, 16GB of internal storage plus a couple of cameras - an 8MP offering round the back, while the front sports a 2MP sensor.

So while the Samsung Ativ S is by no means cheap, it's pretty much the Windows Phone 8 equivalent to the Android-toting Galaxy S3 - so perhaps the claimed price is not all that shocking.

LG's Nexus possibly revealed in database, called LG Nexus 4

LG's Nexus possibly revealed in database, called LG Nexus 4
Peekaboo (credit: SlashGear)

Carphone Warehouse, the UK and Europe's largest independent smartphone retailer, is on a roll lately.

First, a rogue database listing seemed to reveal that a 32GB Google Nexus 7 and Samsung Galaxy Nexus 2 are on their way way.

On Wednesday, another snapshot of the retailer's inventory may have revealed the name of the rumored LG Nexus device, which at one time was referred to as the LG Optimus G Nexus.

The image shows "LG NEXUS4 Black" and "LG NEXUS4 White" in Carphone's inventory, suggesting that LG's new Nexus device may in fact be called the LG Nexus 4.

What happened to LG Nexus 1, 2 and 3?

Astute readers may be wondering what happened to the LG Nexus 1, 2 and 3, but the "4" in LG Nexus 4 is likely a reference to the screen size rather than the hardware iteration.

As in the Nexus 7, which packs a 7-inch display, the LG Nexus 4's screen will likely stretch 4 inches diagonally.

Unfortunately, the image reveals little else, besides that the LG Nexus 4 could come in both black and white flavors.

All we know about the LG Nexus 4

Besides what's revealed in the database snapshot, most of what's "known" about the LG Nexus 4 is hearsay and rumors.

According to one tipster, who supposedly went hands-on with the unannounced device, the LG Nexus 4 resembles Samsung's Galaxy Nexus, though its innards are based more closely on LG's Optimus G.

Earlier in October, rumors of LG's Nexus first popped up alongside a report outing Google's Android 4.2 Jelly Bean update and claiming that Google will be loosening its grip on the Nexus brand starting in November.

The following day, more substantial rumors pegged the LG Nexus 4 with a quad-core Snapdragon S4 chip, 2GB of memory, a 1280x768 True-HD IPS display, an 8-megapixel rear camera, and onboard wireless charging (though a non-removable battery and no microSD slot soured all that good news slightly).

Is Oct. 29 the day?

The world might not have long to wait for the Nexus 4, as a French newspaper is reporting Oct. 29 will be the day of the handset's big reveal.

CNET reported last week that it spoke with someone "briefed on the matter" who confirmed a late October unveiling for the LG/Google Nexus collaboration.

While the French paper that brought the Oct. 29 date forward didn't confirm or deny a mid-November launch for the product in the U.S., it did report the Nexus 4 will turn up in France in December.

Michelle Fitzsimmons contributed to this report.

Kobo pushes out new Mini and Glo e-readers, plus the Arc Android tablet

Kobo Arc Tablet

Online e-book retailer Kobo has announced the Kobo Arc Android tablet, plus the Kobo Glo and Kobo Mini e-readers.

Kobo, the online e-book retailer, has swooped in to steal some of Amazon’s thunder by announcing three new products — the Kobo Mini and Kobo Glo e-readers and the Kobo Arc Android tablet.

Let’s start with the Kobo Arc tablet. This isn’t the first tablet that Kobo has released, as the Kobo Vox came out late last year, but was eclipsed by the better specced, more exciting Kindle Fire. Not being Google Certified didn’t help the Vox either, but it appears Kobo has learned from its mistakes with the Arc.

Powering the 7-inch, 1280 x 800 pixel display is a 1.5Ghz, dual-core Texas Instruments processor, along with 1GB of RAM, while the operating system is built around Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich.

Kobo has included the Google Play store this time around too, but has also added its own user interface over the top of the Android OS, along with a new feature called Tapestries.

At first it sounds like a customizable homescreen really, as you can “pin” favorite books, pictures, videos and web links to your Tapestry, but it gets a little more interesting as the Arc will then offer content suggestions based on what you’ve pinned to the screen.

Kobo has also added features such as Wi-Fi, Wi-Fi Direct, a front-facing 1.3-megapixel camera, and a battery that should provide 10 hours of continuous reading. Two models will be made available, one with 8GB and the other with 16GB of internal memory, and they’ll be priced at $199/£169 and $249/£199 respectively when it’s released in November.

Kobo Glo and Kobo Mini

On to the Kobo Glo, then, which is a 6-inch e-reader. The E Ink touchscreen boasts an impressive 1024 x 768 resolution with 210 dots-per-inch, which at the moment, trumps the competition.

The clue as to what makes the Glo standout is in its name, as the screen has an adjustable front light, so it can be read in the dark. Naturally, this affects battery life, and with the light on you can expect 55 hours of reading time, but more than a month with both it and the built-in Wi-Fi switched off.

There’s 2GB of internal memory with a microSD card slot to boost this by 32GB, plus the Glo will accept .ePub books protected by Adobe DRM too. This is especially helpful, as unlike the Kindle, you won’t be restricted to a single store from which to buy your books. It’s set for release on October 1 for $129/£99.

Finally, we come to the Kobo Mini, the company’s basic e-reader. It features a stock 5-inch E Ink screen, 2GB of internal memory, Wi-Fi and a lightweight 134 gram chassis. It too will be out on October 1 at the bargain price of $79/£59.

Kobo’s new hardware range looks great, and is priced competitively, however it will still need to contend with whatever Amazon, Barnes & Noble and potentially even Apple have in store for us before the all-important Holiday season. Will these devices help put Kobo’s name on the map?

AT&T-branded Sony Xperia T spotted on a press shot

The UK’s retailer Phones4U is now taking pre-orders for the newly announced Xperia T. The first users to pre-order it will even get Sony’s SmartWatch as a gift. Nothing out of the ordinary so far.

If you take a closer look on the Xperia T press images on phones4u.co.uk, you’ll find one with the AT&T’s logo below the home button (attached above). What’s even more interesting is that the American Xperia T comes with a slightly different rear panel than the international model. This could be a hint for some additional LTE functionality or a removable back cover.

Anyway, the shots seems legit so we guess an AT&T announcement is imminent. Stay tuned!
