Jelly Bean update for Samsung Galaxy Note 10.1 rolling out now

The Samsung Galaxy Note 10.1 tablet launched with Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich (unlike its smaller Note II sibling), but its Jelly Bean update has now started its rollout. It's the 4.1 version of Jelly Bean and not 4.2, but the differences between the two aren't major anyway.

The rollout is rather limited as of now - just in Germany as an OTA update that weighs in at 300MB.

The guys from AllAboutSamsung.de, who have already installed the update, report that it improves performance, adds the same S Pen functionality as the Note II has (e.g. the new Quick commands), adds Pop Up Play and new Mini Apps. Paper Artist is also pre-installed.

Samsung Galaxy Note 10.1 gets Android 4.1 Jelly Bean update in Germany

If you don't live in Germany and you just can’t wait to try out Jelly Bean on your Galaxy Note 10.1, you can grab the ROM from SamFirmware. The update brings the S Pen-enabled tablet to Android version 4.1.1 (PDA N8000XXBLJ9, CSC N8000OXABLJ9).

Keep in mind that flashing the ROM manually will void your warranty and you might brick your tablet, so proceed at your own risk.

UK networks come together to accelerate 4G rollout

UK networks come together to accelerate 4G rollout
Zoom, zoom, zoom

EE, O2, Three and Vodafone have joined forces to form a joint company focused on accelerating the 4G network rollout on the frequency freed up by the analogue TV switch off.

The company is called Digital Mobile Spectrum Limited and is responsible for ensuring Freeview customers continue to receive clear TV signal, while the 4G network is rolled out on the 800MHz spectrum – which is scheduled to start in spring next year.

The creation of this joint venture means 4G services can be accelerated, with the UK's competitive 4G network becoming available as soon as possible in 2013.

Ofcom and Government

This has all come about after Ofcom and the Government met with mobile operators to discuss how the UK's 4G network rollout could be accelerated – allowing all carriers to get in on the super-fast network, after EE was allowed to launch its service early.

There's still the small matter of the spectrum auction for the networks to fight over, but apparently everything is now in place to allow it to be processed as quickly as possible.

There's still no exact date for when the likes of O2, Three and Vodafone will be able to join EE in offering 4G to customers, but it could now be in the first half of next year with this major stumbling block out of the way.

Nokia Belle FP2 update pulled, users report issues

Yesterday, Nokia started the rollout of the Belle FP2 update for the last crop of Nokia OS (formerly Symbian) phones including the 603, 700, 701 and 808 PureView (with the PureView getting extra imaging and gallery features). Shortly after, though, the update was pulled from Nokia's servers.

The reason is that while for some the update process went fine and everything worked smoothly after it, others experienced various issues ranging from unable to install the update to problems with different parts of the updated software.

You can check out this thread in the Nokia Discussions forum to see what kind of problems people are experiencing and also the comment thread under our news article.

Nokia is investigating the issues and will put the update back up once they've been resolved. You can keep an eye on the Discussions thread for updates or wait on the Software Update app to notify you of a new update.

Thanks to sss for the tip!
