Windows Phone 7.8 features leak, release date still a mystery

As the Windows Phone 7.8 release is edging closer, leaks are starting to intensify. Beta builds, Windows Phone 7.8-running Nokia Lumia 510 and a promotional materials for the latter – there are plenty sources to feed us with spicy rumors.

The Lumia 510 brochure is the most interesting piece, though it’s in Finnish. It does say the Lumia 510 will have a new Start screen with more available color themes, though. It also confirms the Windows Phone 7.8 won’t be the last firmware update you’ll get, probably to reassure the people who intend to buy the phone that it’s getting long-term support.

Windows Phone 7.8 leaks from various places

The guys over at Winp.ch managed to get their hands on a Windows Phone 7.8-running Lumia 510 and confirmed a few details as well. In addition to the resizable Live Tiles, re-designed system apps (Office, Xbox Games, Store, etc.), 10 new theme colors, we’ll also get a new boot screen matching Windows Phone 8 style and Live Lock Screen Wallpaper, which was previously introduced within Windows Phone 8. There is no info if that one will work with third-party apps though.

In case you are interested the build number of Windows Phone 7.8 is 7.10.8858.136. As the rumor has it, the update is already released to the manufacturers and it shouldn't be long before it starts seeding to the end users.

S40 still alive with Nokia 205 and 206, priced at around $62

Today Nokia announced two new additions to its feature-phone lineup, the Asha 205 and Asha 206. Both phones come with dual-SIM variants as well, and look to dethrone the Asha 201 as the cheapest offering currently in the Asha lineup.

The Asha 205 comes with a 2.4 inch screen of 320 x 240 pixel resolution, 64 MB of internal memory, and a 0.3 MP camera capable of VGA images and QCIF video. It also features a full-QWERTY keyboard.

The Asha 206 has the same 2.4 inch QVGA screen, except in portrait orientation, and the same 64 MB of internal memory. Its camera has been bumped up to 1.3 MP, although it comes with a regular keypad, rather than a full keyboard.

Both new devices feature Nokia's new Slam connectivity feature, which allows fast sharing over Bluetooth without the need to pair devices. Slam works with Bluetooth versions 2.1 and up, and on several mobile platforms (Windows Phone and iOS are not supported currently, though). Also, if you're worried about the rather sparse internal memory filling up quickly, each device supports microSD cards up to 32 GB.

Both the Nokia Asha 205 and Asha 206 feature a dedicated Facebook button for quick access to your social profile, and are available in several color combinations.

Look for the Asha 205 and 206 to become available in the coming weeks for $62 before taxes and fees.

ZTE Apache to beat Samsung to eight-core punch

ZTE Apache to beat Samsung to eight-core punch
Not to be confused with an actual helicopter

The ZTE Apache could touch down as the first eight-core smartphone next year, if rumours are to be believed.

According to Chinese site China Times, ZTE has teamed up with MediaTek to launch a flagship, octo-core device, currently going by the military name Apache.

On top of that ridiculous processor, the report also suggests the phone will sport a full HD display, snappy 13MP camera and 4G connectivity.

In a spin

Last week we heard that Samsung was planning on unveiling its own octo-core processor early next year, which could potentially land in its flagship devices later on – Samsung Galaxy S4 or Samsung Galaxy Note 3 anyone?

If this latest report is true, then ZTE is about to steal Samsung's limelight by beating the Korean firm to it with the aforementioned Apache – although China Times is a pretty hit and miss source of hardware rumours and hasn't explicitly stated where it got its Apache-based intel, so we're not holding out a huge amount of hope at the moment.

We'll be keeping an eye out for the ridiculously over-powered handset at CES 2013 and MWC 2013, just in case it makes a sneak appearance.

We're waiting to hear back from ZTE regarding the Apache handset, although the Chinese firm is unlikely to comment on speculation.

Samsung Galaxy Note 2 sells 5 million worldwide

Samsung Galaxy Note 2 sells 5 million worldwide
The Note 2 is selling well

The Samsung Galaxy Note 2 has sold more than 5 million units worldwide, selling 2 million in the last month.

At the beginning of this month, the Korean mobile maker announced the device had sold 3 million units. The Note 2 has been on sale for five months, and originally hit UK shelves on October 1. It only made its way stateside a month ago, which might well account for the recent sales spike.

Samsung made the announcement on its Korean website. (Here it is translated into English.)

This doesn't mean 5 million people are using the Galaxy Note 2, though. Rather, Samsung is counting sales to retailers. In other words, more than 5 million devices have shipped to go on sale, with some of them sold, some of them still on the shelves. But still, it shows the demand is there.

Eclipsed by the S3

While 5 million is impressive, it's a fraction of the 30 million sales the Galaxy S3 has notched up. But then the S3 has been on sale longer, and has a smaller screen (4.8-inches to the Note 2's 5.5-inches).

Indeed, many thought the original Note wouldn't sell, being too big to be a phone, and too small to use as a tablet. Instead, it's spearheaded a whole new category of device, known as the 'phablet'. HTC is rumoured to be readying a UK equivalent of its 5-inch J Butterfly (as it's known in Japan) and Droid DNA (as it's called in the USA) to compete with the Note 2.

HTC Deluxe to be renamed for Europe?

HTC Deluxe to be renamed for Europe?
A last-minute name change? (credit: GSM Arena)

HTC has announced on its Facebook page that the HTC Deluxe won't come to Europe.

Before everyone gets up in arms about the supposed cancellation though, it is most likely the handset will arrive on these shores, just under a different name.

The Deluxe is the handset that's leaked a few times now. It's said to be the European name for the HTC J Butterfly (in Japan) and the HTC Droid DNA (in the USA). So whichever name it goes under, it should have a 5-inch 1080p screen, 2GB of RAM, and Android 4.1 Jelly Bean. A rose by any other name…

HTC was responding to a fan who posted a link to Friday's leak that saw pictures of the Deluxe in three colour variants.

The response translates as: "the Deluxe unfortunately will not come to Europe."

Deluxe denial

It's unusual for HTC to make an outright denial like this. Usually - like most companies - it would just say it doesn't comment on rumour or speculation. So maybe it wants to let us know the Deluxe definitely isn't what the handset will be called.

The Deluxe looks like a real challenger to the Samsung Galaxy Note 2. It's slightly smaller than the Note 2, with a 5-inch screen, but will easily dwarf the likes of the iPhone 5.

When these pictures leaked on Friday, we heard an official announcement was scheduled for December 6. So hopefully we should know for certain then.

What do you think the Deluxe will be called? Let us know.

Best app updates of the week

Apps that just hit the market are always appealing because they're new and exciting, but some of the old standard apps are getting updates that keep them ahead of the competition. We take a look at the biggest and best app updates to come available this week.

There are a ton of new apps leaking into every app marketplace, trying to vie for position and make itself a contender in its respective category. This gives existing app creators good reason to keep up with updates and offer up new features whenever possible. We see tons of new updates becoming available every week, and its easy for them to pass by without much notice. Here’s a collection of updates that you won’t want to skip.

Skype for Android (Version 3.0)

Smartphone owners that default to Skype for video or audio calls aren’t going to notice any changes right when they open up the application, but odds are good a sudden understanding will strike during a crystal clear call. Skype has reworked some of the internals of its app, adding a new SILK codec that is designed specifically for the human voice and optimizing call quality based on connection speed. A new login option for Microsoft account users has been added in preparation for Skype’s takeover as Microsoft’s default chat option. Finally, tablet users will enjoy a new layout that makes use of all the screen space available with a two column layout. Seven-inch tablet owners beware, though, as Skype 3.0 locks into landscape layout while your camera likely requires a portrait alignment. It can create for some neck pain.

Runkeeper for Android (Version 2.14.1.1)

Runkeeper serves to encourage people to keep running, which is no easy task. Now in its latest update, its encouraging running with a partner, even if it’s just digitally. Social features like the Friends tab now offers interaction between you and your fellow cardio-centric friends. Facebook integration will bring your contacts to you, and there’s an in-app messaging system that allows you to send words of encouragement–or taunts–to your friends. Your friends will also show up on a leader board, creating a little competition for your circle of runners. The activities page has also gotten an update and a new tab-style navigation system will help users get around in the app.

Amazon for iOS (Version 2.3.1)

Tis the season to do your shopping. That’s what Amazon believes at least, as its latest app update is focused on giving consumers more access to enticing offers. The latest iOS update for Amazon, version 2.3.1, brings push notifications for item shipping and arrival times, letting users know exactly where their purchases are. There’s also a daily alert option that will give you Amazon’s listing of Lightning Deals for that day. The iPad version of the app also got a nice new feature, allowing users to check out product images and descriptions up close with a pinch and double tap to zoom feature.

Nokia Transport for Windows Phone 7 (Version 3.1 beta)

Not content with launching a brand new iOS app, Nokia decided to do some tweaking to its existing apps as well. The improvements come to beta version 3.1 for its Windows Phone 7 app, Transport. The app has always been designed for the commuter in mind, and now a segmented map will make navigation easier. More detail will be available in each individual leg of a journey, so users can get a closer look at their surroundings in the app. There’s also a new countdown feature that will let public transportation users know when the next bus or train is scheduled to arrive. It essentially does what Transport (also known as Transit) 3.0 does on Windows Phone 8 devices but on an older operating system.

Sparrow for iOS (Version 1.3.3)

Sparrow users that own an iPhone 5 can finally get proper use from the email app, as version 1.3.3 for iOS optimizes the app for the iPhone 5′s bigger display. Further improving the app is a feature that allows it to open Passport-specific documents. Essentially, the update brings Sparrow up to speed for iOS 6 and makes it completely compatible with the latest offering of Apple devices it calls home. The email client has been neglected a bit by its owner, Google, since being purchased in July of this year, so the sudden attention is welcome and will hopefully continue.

Nokia's ex-imaging chief heading to Jaguar Land Rover

Nokia's ex-imaging chief heading to Jaguar Land Rover
Damian Dinning seeking a new start

Nokia's outgoing head of imaging already has a new job lined-up. He's on the way to Jaguar Land Rover.

Damian Dinning left his post as lead programme manager for Imaging Experience after eight years, late last week.

In his new post, Dinning will be working on connected cars, which is quite the career change from perfecting cameras in mobile phones.

He said in a statement: "At a very young age, I had two very strong interests, cars and photography. With regards to the latter, I wanted to be able to take photography from the nerdy or for special occasions only use it was at the time, to being part of everyday life.

"I never thought I'd be able to play a role in making that happen, but my time at Nokia gave me exactly that opportunity. I really feel I've been able to fulfil that ambition.

Different area

"Whilst we're really only just entering the next major stage in the development of photography and I still have a very clear vision of how I see it's longer term development, I fully recognise this is the perfect opportunity for me to work in quite a different area."

Dinning, who oversaw the launch of the headline-making Nokia 808 Pureview handset and the Windows Phone 8 Nokia Lumia 920 cited personal reasons for his departure.

Nokia was intent on moving him to Finland as it sought to relocate key positions. Dinning said he was not on board with that decision.

You can read Dinning's full statement in the post on the PureViewClub blog, linked in the hat-tip below.
