Mark your calendars for Nokia's July 11 event, look out for EOS

Mark your calendars for Nokia's July 11 event, look out for EOS
Zoom in

Nokia is throwing an all day event July 11, according to an invitation sent out today.

"Zoom. Reinvented," the invite, depicting a magnifying glass, reads. "See more from Nokia."

Other than a time - 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. ET - few firm details are discernible from the black and yellow note. However, chances are we're in for a new high-end camera phone to come into focus.

Could this be the day we see the rumored Nokia EOS come to life, a handset said to pack 41MP and that's been popping up in leaks left and right? The phone, codenamed "Elvis," may just enter the building.

More blips!

News can be so scattered these days, but thankfully our blips help make sense of the chaos.

Nokia to hold an event on July 11, says it'll reinvent the zoom

Nokia has just issued a press invite with a very interesting design stating "Zoom reinvented", hinting the company is ought to officially announce the Nokia EOS cameraphone.

While the EOS moniker hasn't been confirmed in any way, nor the number of the megapixels the camera of the phone will sport, we have a very good idea of how it'll look. Nokia is also likely to show new Windows Phone 8 features that'll make use of the first proper cameraphone running the OS.

We'll be covering the event up close and keep you up to speed with all the latest Nokia has to announce. It's certainly going to be a wild ride, considering Nokia's competition is gearing up for a cameraphone-oriented battle.

Samsung Galaxy Camera strikes back, sequel launching June 20

Samsung Galaxy Camera strikes back, sequel launching June 20
If at first you don't succeed...

Undeterred by a recent JPMorgan report predicting slower Samsung Galaxy S4 sales, the company is going on the offensive with plans for its next Android camera.

The Korea Times reported Thursday that Samsung Chief Executive Officer Shin Jong-kyun appears to have channeled his inner Obi-Wan Kenobi this week, deflecting a drop in the company's stock price with a new product tease.

Last week, JPMorgan claimed Samsung faced "significant setbacks" with sales of its flagship Galaxy S4 smartphone, causing shares in the company to drop by nearly 6.2 percent - a four-month low.

With a mere wave of his Jedi-capable hand, Shin shifted the media's focus off of the bad news and onto one of the new products Samsung plans to launch next week.

Mirrorless future

"Samsung will release our latest mirrorless camera that runs on Google's Android software," Shin told reporters in Seoul yesterday.

The company plans to introduce the Galaxy Camera 2 at an event in London next Thursday, June 20, although it hasn't detailed what new features we might expect or when the Android-powered shooter will begin shipping.

Although point-and-shoot digital cameras have waned as smartphones have improved, Samsung hopes to leverage its manufacturing prowess by laying claim to a new market for data-equipped smart cameras that rival DSLRs in quality.

Shin also confirmed there are no plans to lay down arms in ongoing patent disputes with Apple, perhaps newly emboldened by a U.S. International Trade Commission ruling that older iPhone and iPad models infringe on Samsung patents.

US Samsung Galaxy S4 Active to launch exclusively on AT&T

AT&T officially announced that it will be launching the Samsung Galaxy S4 Active exclusively in the US. The carrier dunked a unit in water to celebrate, relying on the IP67-certified hardware to keep going.

Pre-orders will be starting tomorrow, Friday, with the first Galaxy S4 Active units expected to hit AT&T stores (both brick and mortar and online) about a week later on June 21. The price is set at $200 with a 2-year contract.

The Galaxy S4 Active for AT&T will be available in two color versions: Urban Gray and Dive Blue. The Orange Flare color option – which is the one we used for our preview – is not available.

Still, not bad for a fully featured flagship with a 5" 1080p screen (an LCD instead of Super AMOLED like the regular S4), Snapdragon 600 chipset with four Krait 300 cores at 1.9GHz, fast LTE connectivity and 8MP camera (down from 13MP for the city slicker S4).

There's more – IR blaster to control your TV, Air Gestures, SAFE certification for security-conscious business types and all sorts of other features. Here are the highlights, presented in 60 seconds:

Pre-orders will be through this page (not available just yet) starting tomorrow. Before you go, here's the Galaxy S4 Active taking a dive:

Apple plans bigger iPhones, cheaper iPhones, all the iPhones, say sources

Apple plans bigger iPhones, cheaper iPhones, all the iPhones, say sources
All the iPhones. All of 'em.

Now that iOS 7 has been announced, attention has turned to what hardware Apple will launch alongside it, be it an iPhone 5S or an iPhone 6.

Today several insiders have told Reuters that Apple has been mulling over the possibility of a 4.7-inch iPhone as well as a 5.7-inch device straying in the direction of the 'phablet' arena.

What's more, these chatty source-types have conceded that Apple has 'floated' the idea of a cheap iPhone model with a price tag of $99 (that's around £63 or AU$103), with the budget range coming in up to six colours - a rumour we've heard before.

Technicolour

But before you chuck your Samsung Galaxy Ace out the window and run down to form an orderly queue outside your local Apple Store, take a knee. The plans are still being explored, the four people "with knowledge of the matter" say, with plans laid out for cheap iPhone launches over the next four years.

The bigger-screened iPhones, however, are supposedly set to launch next year which means that one could feasibly be known as the iPhone 6.

Although one tipster told the news agency that Apple "constantly change product specifications almost to the final moment" so there's no way to be sure of what the company really and truly has in the pipeline, it's not outside of the realms of possibility that Apple wants to stomp all over the Samsung Galaxy Note 2's turf.

So, that's bigger iPhones, smaller iPhones, more expensive iPhones, cheaper iPhones and multi-coloured iPhones all coming within the next four years. At least one of these rumours has gotta be right. But which?

Reuters: Apple may be considering larger iPhones

Apple is looking into creating iPhones with bigger screens, specifically 4.7 and 5.7-inch models, as early as next year according to a report from Reuters. There are also rumors that cheaper iPhone models will be offered in a range of colors.

While Apple has not yet commented on the speculation of larger-screened models, it's not inconceivable to believe that such a device will come out eventually. The Cupertino company is currently facing a pretty had battle against a host of 4.7" to 5" high-end droids, which are eating into the iPhone's market share. And last years' iPhone 5 chose that the company is willing to leave the 3.5-inch comfort zone it has been inhabiting since the its first smartphone debuted in 2007.

Apart from the anticipated iPhone 5S, Apple is also expected to launch a cheaper plastic model with 5-6 different color options, to differentiate it from the mainstream iPhone, which traditionally only comes in black or white. Pricing of the cheaper iPhones could be as low as $99, although any expected release date could be pushed back to 2014.

Other Reuters' sources indicate that test production of both the iPhone 5S and plastic multicolor models will be beginning next month, with production being ramped up in August for an anticipated September launch date. Some 20 million plastic iPhones are expected to ship in Q4 of this year, according to a source in Asia.

New Nokia EOS photo sizes it up against the Lumia 920

We already got familiar with the upcoming Nokia EOS cameraphone and concluded it looked pretty similar to the Nokia Lumia 920.

However, Vizileaks, one of the main sources of the Nokia EOS leaks has taken yet another photo of the Windows Phone 8-running cameraphone to show the world just how visually similar the new Nokia flagship is to its predecessor.

Not many differences can be spotted at first sight, but looking closer reveals that Nokia has changed the position of the logo and the front-facing camera on the EOS. The screen of the Nokia EOS also extends just a bit more, than the Lumia 920, leaving a very thin plastic frame below it.

Naturally, the Nokia EOS stands at an angle as its camera hump protrudes quite a lot. We are eager to compare it to the recently announced Samsung Galaxy S4 Zoom, but Nokia hasn't mentioned anything yet about a potential official announcement of the EOS.
