Motorola Droid Razr M: What you need to know

Motorola is getting ready to take on the toughest smartphone competition with the Droid Razr M. Leaked images and specs have given us a sneak peak at the Android 4.0: Ice Cream Sandwich device ahead of today's official unveiling at a Motorola-Verizon event in New York City.

Also known as the Motorola XT907, or by its codename the Scorpion Mini, leaked Images of the Droid Razr M have it looking similar to the Droid RAZR and the Droid RAZR Maxx in size and design. The phone is set launch on Verizon's 4G LTE network.

Early spec reports

Leaked specifications have tipped the Droid Razr M's processor as a dual-core SnapDragon S4 clocked at 1.5GHz. Complimenting that is 1GB of DDR2 RAM and 8GB of internal storage, with room for a removable MicroSD card of up to 32GB.

The Droid Razr M's screen will be a 4.3-in. Super Amoled Advanced display sporting a resolution of 1196 by 720. Crafted with Gorilla Glass 2, it will be highly scratch resistant, but isn't edge-to-edge as was once rumored.

In the camera department, the Droid Razr M will have an 8MP video camera capable of capturing in 720p. The front-facing video chat camera will be 3MP.

One OS behind

According to leaks and early reports, the Droid Razr M will launch running Android 4.0: Ice Cream Sandwich, rather than the latest version of the Android OS, Android 4.1: Jelly Bean. Since the new Motorola handset has beefy specs, an possible upgrade to the latest OS version does seem possible.

Ready for Verizon's 4G LTE network

Today's official unveiling of the Droid Razr M in NYC is a joint event hosted by exclusive Droid Razr carrier Verizon Wireless and manufacturer Motorola. While Verizon's 4G LTE network is a centerpiece of the push for this new smartphone, it will of course run on 3G, if Verizon's 4G network is not available in your area.

The Droid Razr M will be Mobile Hotspot capable, able to connect up to 8 devices on 4G, and 5 on 3G.

A two-tone phone?

The first images of the Droid Razr M have shown it with Motorola's signature Kevlar-patterned backing, but with cases in either white or black. The result is a two-tone look that has elicited some mixed opinions the new phone's aesthetic.

Release date?

No official word on the release date of the Droid Razr M has been given, but word on the street points to an October or November release for this new Motorola handset. This is information will likely be revealed at today's Motorola-Verizon launch even in NYC.
