A mammoth 6.1-inch smartphone could be in the works over in China, as details of the Huawei Ascend Mate get their first airing.

According to a report from MyDrivers, the super sized device was apparently spotted on Huawei's Chinese website, sporting a huge 6.1-inch, 1080p display which would put the 5.5-inch Samsung Galaxy Note 2 to shame.

As well as the screen size, other details of the monster phone were also leaked, including a 1.8GHz quad-core processor, 2GB of RAM and 4,000mAh battery.

World's most powerful smartphone

If these specs are to be believed then the Ascend Mate is set up to be the world's most powerful smartphone, an accolade currently held by its closest rival, the Galaxy Note 2.

The Ascend Mate will apparently measure a relatively slender 9.9mm in depth, and while there's no official word from Huawei about the device, it wouldn't be a surprise to see other manufacturers take on Samsung's mega-super-phone.

There are no details surrounding a potential Huawei Ascend Mate release date or price, so we've contacted the Chinese firm to see if it can shed any light on the news.

HTC may have a word with Huawei

The Huawei Ascend W1 has apparently been leaked in photos, sporting a design which may look familiar to some HTC owners.

Of all the initial Windows Phone 8 handsets set to launch alongside the new mobile platform at the end of the month, the Huawei Ascend W1 is the one we know least about.

We've already heard all about the HTC 8X, HTC 8S, Nokia Lumia 920, Lumia 820 and to a slightly lesser extent, the Samsung Ativ S, but the Chinese firm has held back information on its offering.

One X clone?

Now images have appeared on Chinese site Blog of Mobile, showing a fetching blue handset, which sports a very similar camera layout to the HTC One X round the back.

On the front there's a slightly more original design, with a small lip at the bottom of the handset giving you a flash of the blue case in the sea of black glass which greets you.

The Ascend W1 will reportedly pack a 4-inch WVGA display, 1.2GHz dual-core processor, 512MB of RAM, 4GB of internal storage, 5MP rear camera, VGA front snapper and a 2,000mAh battery – so not really a One X, or even One S contender.

According to a report yesterday, the Huawei Ascend W1 could land for around $300-$350 (£185-215/AU$290-340), making it the cheapest of the Windows Phone 8 pack.

Huawei’s Windows Phone 8 challengers could be announced later this week

Huawei could be ready to announce its first Windows Phone 8 devices later this week, currently known as the Ascend W1 and Ascend W2.

Later this week Huawei could launch its first Windows Phone 8 devices, currently known as the Ascend W1 and Ascend W2, joining offerings from three other top-name manufacturers to complete Microsoft’s Windows Phone release line-up.

Huawei didn’t join the Windows Phone 7 party, and was the single new name announced at the Windows Phone 8 unveiling in June, so it’s going to be interesting to see how its phones compare with Nokia, Samsung and HTC’s.

The company promised its “first smartphone running on the Windows Phone platform” would be part of the Ascend range, and that it would be out “at the end of the year” so it looks like this timescale will be about right.

Huawei’s CEO has taken to the Chinese social network Sina Weibo to talk about the first device, saying that the Ascend W1 will come in a variety of colors — black, blue, white and pink — and that it will go on sale in the USA, Asia and Europe. The phone could be announced as soon as September 25, and will go on sale in November or December.

The Ascend W1 is likely to be a mid-range phone along the same lines as the HTC 8S and Nokia’s Lumia 820, but it could be joined by a flagship model, the Ascend W2. There are no firm specs for either device, but they could repeat what we’ve seen on previous Ascend Android phones, meaning a 4.3-inch screen or larger, an 8 megapixel screen and a 1.5Ghz dual-core Snapdragon processor are all possible.

Where Huawei is likely to differ from its competitors though, is price, and the Ascend W1 has been rumored to sell for the equivalent of $317 when it goes on sale. An early pre-order price for the HTC 8S puts it at £225 in the UK, which is $365 at current exchange rates.

Huawei Ascend W1 release date could be September 25

Are you ready to say hello to Huawei's Windows Phone 8 devices?

The Huawei Ascend W1 may get unveiled next week as the Chinese firm looks to launch its range of Windows Phone 8 devices.

According to Chinese site winp, Huawei will launch the Ascend W1 in a range of four colours (black, white, blue, pink) on September 25 with a different design to the likes of the Ascend P1 and Ascend P1 S.

Although no specifications were leaked alongside this information, the Huawei Ascend W1 will apparently be available from either November or December in Europe, China and the US.

Fab Four

Huawei is one of four manufacturers given the green light by Microsoft to produce the first wave of Windows Phone 8 devices, and looks set to be the last to announce its handsets.

We've already seen the Samsung Ativ S, Nokia Lumia 920 and Lumia 820, and HTC has a press conference scheduled for Wednesday in New York, where it's expect to unveil its Windows Phone 8 offerings.

Huawei to ship the Ascend D Quad on September 12 in China

The Huawei Ascend D Quad was one of the superstars at this year's MWC in Barcelona, but it got off to a rocky start as the development of the company's own K3V2 chipset with quad-core CPU didn't go according to plan. As a result, the Huawei Ascend D Quad was delayed time and again, but it appears that the waiting is about to end.

Huawei has finally managed to solve the CPU production issues and has announced the Ascend D Quad will be hitting the shelves on September 12. In its home country, the flagship will be selling for RMB 2,699 ($425). However, with competition such as the quad-core monster Xiaomi 2, selling for RMB 1,999 ($315), Huawei will have a hard time convincing Chinese buyers to go for the Ascend D Quad.

Still, we haven't yet thoroughly tested what Huawei's quad-core K3V2 1.5 GHz CPU is capable of, so we might be wrong there. Unfortunately, the company still hasn't announced a date for the international release of its Android flagship device. Here's hoping it's not too far away now.
