HTC One Max photo leak shows just how big the phablet is

The HTC One Max will be truly massive, according to the the latest photo leak.

The alleged upcoming phablet popped up on nowhereelse.fr (the same site that yesterday brought us a supposed LG G2 manual), where it appeared courtesy of the same person who leaked HTC One Max photos on Monday this week.

Today's leak is a big improvement, though, as it shows exactly how big the HTC One Max really is.

The phone that it's under is reportedly the Motorola MOTO XT882, a device that's 4.81 x 2.46 x 0.52 inches with a 4-inch display - showing just how much bigger the HTC One Max really is.

Tony Stark was able to build this in a cave

It looks like the HTC One Max may be on the docket for IFA 2013 as rumors of a September release are compounded by HTC's own teases.

Just yesterday the Taiwanese company release a snippet of video involving a briefcase, a helicopter, and a figure who may or may not be be Iron Man.

An ominous "big things ahead" tag line accompanied the tease.

Bigger and Better

At this time it's thought that HTC will send the HTC One Max into the ring to duke it out directly with Samsung's Galaxy Note 3, and it's yet to be seen which one will turn out more massive.

Currently the HTC One Max is believed to have a 5.9-inch 1080p display and a 2.3GHz quad-core Snapdragon 800, which would make it both bigger and better than the HTC One.

It could even arrive rocking Android 4.3.

Blue HTC One photo makes its first online appearance

We've known for some time that the HTC One will be available in blue. Lately, the rumors have been heating up with new info, which suggested it will be a carrier-specific color version (Verizon in the US).

Whatever the truth is, we hope we hear it soon from HTC itself. Until then, we finally have the opportunity to see the blue color in question.

We don't see any carrier branding on this pic (read Verizon's), but this doesn't mean anything. As far as we've heard, Verizon will be releasing their HTC One on August 22, so it won't be long until the blue color gets truly official.

So what do you think? Is it the hue you were expecting all this time?

Key Lime Pie to come with neat unlock-to-app feature?

Key Lime Pie to come with neat unlock-to-app feature?
Tomorrow's homescreen unlock, today! (credit: USPTO)

Google's latest patent hints that future Android iterations will let you draw specific patterns to unlock your phone straight into the app you want.

The application suggests that you'll set up several patterns to unlock your phone to take you into, say, the camera app or the dialer screen.

It's simple yet handy, as all the best things are. Could we see the new unlock-ability make its debut in Android 5.0 - also known as Key Lime Pie?

All killer, no filler

Let's hope so. But just when might that be? At this point, your guess is as good as ours.

Wait, no, that's not true. Our guesses are pretty solid and we reckon October 2013 is a good bet.

We don't expect this nifty unlock-to-app to be the headlining feature though - we've had a think about what we'd like in the next Android version here.

Pantech unveils the Vega LTE-A IM-A880S phablet in Korea

Pantech has come up with some mouth-watering hardware in the face of the just announced Pantech Vega LTE-A phablet. The announcement takes place just a day before the official unveiling of the LG G2.

The South Korean smartphone maker is not well-known in Europe, but we've seen a few of its devices make their way to the States. South Korea, however, is Pantech's prime market, even though it's got the smallest market share of all OEMs there. Even though we rarely cover handsets for the South Korean market, this time around we are talking one awesome-sounding smartphone.

To begin with, the Vega LTE-A supports the fastest LTE-A data transmission standard with speeds up to 150Mbps, which is enough already to put it into a rather exclusive club.

Pantech Vega LTE-A IM-A880S

On the front of the Vega LTE-A, sits a 5.6-inch 1080p IPS screen, while on the back there is a 13MP camera and a fingerprint sensor. A 2.3GHz quad-core Snapdragon 800 chipset with 2GB RAM powers the whole thing with the juice coming from a 3100mAh battery, which can be fully charged in only 94 min thanks to the fast charger.

The Pantech Vega LTE-A will launch in South Korea next week as an SK Telecom exclusive (at least in the first few months).

Canalys: Apple may really need that plastic iPhone in China

According to shipment info gathered by the analysts over at Canalys, Apple's smartphone share in China is at 4.8% with a total of 4.3 million device shipments. As a result, Apple has fallen from the fifth down to the seventh overall spot in the manufacturer's ranking for Q3 2013.

Vendors Shipments Market share
Samsung 15.5 17.6%
Lenovo 10.8 12.3%
Yulong 10.7 12.2%
ZTE 7.7 8.7%
Huawei 7.5 8.6%
Xiaomi 4.4 5.0%
Apple 4.3 4.8%
Others 27.1 30.8%

Xiaomi managed to edge out Apple by shipping 4.4 million units. The company has just unveiled its quad-core Red Rice (or Hongmi), which at €99 costs only a fraction of the iPhone price, and will allow it to gain even more ground in the next quarters.

Samsung posted a solid 15.5 million shipments, which allowed it to take first spot with 17.6% market share. Lenovo took the second spot with 10.8 million shipped units and 12.3% market share - barely outpacing the local maker Yulong.

If rumors are to be trusted, Apple may really need a cheaper iPhone 5C to tackle emerging markets, even if it means lowering its profit margin.

LG G2 display leaks a day ahead of announcement

Tomorrow LG is going to finally make the G2 official. Before that though, we get to peek at the phone once again as ETradeSupply has leaked some of the phone's parts. More specifically, the display and front glass panel of the G2 are displayed below.

The LG G2 is said to sport a 5.2" 1080p display. It is expected to be powered by the Snapdragon 800 chipset with a 2.3 GHz quad-core Krait 400 processor and 2GB of RAM. At the back, the smartphone should feature a 13MP optically stabilized camera with LED flash and the volume rocker around it.

By the sound of it, LG definitely has a shot of selling upwards of 10 million units of the device. The series of leaks and photos also show that it's quite the looker.

Furthermore, a report from Korea's MK News suggests that LG's latest flagship is going to hit home turf the very next day, on August 8. In the US, AT&T, Verizon, T-Mobile and Sprint are said to offer the device as early as September. Japan's NTT DoCoMo will be getting a hold of the smartphone, too.

As we reported earlier, about 100 carriers worldwide will have the LG G2 on offer just 3 months after its release. We'll know all the details of the LG G2 at tomorrow's announcement event in New York starting at 11AM EST. The event is going to be streamed live as well.

Nokia Lumia 1020 UK release date and price get leaked

Nokia Lumia 1020 UK release date and price get leaked
It'll cost you an arm, that's for sure

The Nokia Lumia 1020's UK release date has apparently been outed early alongside a price for the 41-megapixel camera smartphone.

The handset will launch on September 5, according to online retailer Expansys, which is currently offering the phone for pre-order.

The less great news is that Expansys is also pricing the 1020 at £599.99 SIM-free, which works out at about £15 a megapixel. Or, in other words, a lot of moolah.

Illumination stations

If this price is accurate, it would make the 1020 Nokia's most expensive Lumia to date. Meanwhile, Unlock Mobiles has the phone slightly cheaper at £549.99.

Of course, given that the Lumia 1020 has the highest resolution sensor in a smartphone, we weren't exactly expecting it to come cheap.

Right now neither Nokia nor any of the major networks are listing the handset release date or giving any indication of what a subsidised contract price might look like.

We expect it won't be long though, and don't worry - we'll tell you as soon as they tell us.

Oppo N-Lens N1 cameraphone leaks with a 12MP shooter

It seems Oppo has decided to make its presence felt in into the world of cameraphones. If the leaked promo materials are to be believed, its first contender is going to be called the N-Lens N1.

Featuring a 12MP camera, the Oppo N-Lens N1 doesn't appear to be too obsessed with sheer number of pixels. Rather, the company is said to use a new image chip dubbed "Owl". Judging by its name, low-light photography is going to be one of the chip's strong sides. The Xenon flash next to the camera would certainly help getting the job done, too.

Naturally, the phone is going to run Android and in the usual Oppo fashion it's going to be featuring the company's proprietary user interface on top.

Purported Oppo N-Lens N1 promo images

Even at this early point of the N-Lens N1's rumored life, there are talks about its pricing. According to online gossip, Oppo's cameraphone will carry a $480 off-contract price tag. There's no saying when it might launch, though.

HTC One Max leaks in another pic, imposing physique confirmed

HTC One Max entered Rumorland in mid-July, but it was just last weekend when we got to see its face for the first time. The phablet is supposed to go official in September with a 5.9" 1080p display and Snapdragon 800 chipset.

Today, a new photo has arrived, showing the HTC One Max siting underneath the Chinese Motorola XT882 that sports "just" a 4" display. As you can see the Moto smartphone is easily dwarfed by the HTC phablet, although it comes nowhere near to matching its slender profile.

What's more interesting though is the switch that is now visible on the left side of the HTC One Max. It's unclear what it's purpose will be, but there are some speculation that it will be used to release the battery cover.

HTC has already started building up the hype for its next flagship. The company has published a 6s video teaser allegedly featuring HTC's new star Robert Downey Jr.

Previously leaked HTC One Max features

September is just a few weeks away, so we won't have to wait long until we see what's HTC prepping for us.

Sony opens Xperia Z Ultra software to the public

Sony has established itself as one of the Android manufacturers most committed to the open source software over the past couple of years. The company has always been quick to release the firmware files has pushed AOSP ROMs to a number of its devices - most recently the Xperia Z, Xperia ZL and Xperia Tablet Z flagships.

Now the company has open-sourced the Xperia Z Ultra software, even though the phablet has only seen very limited market availability so far. The 6.4" monster has only hit shelves in select Asian markets with broader release expected to come in September.
