Motorola’s frameless screen sporting DROID RAZR M for Verizon Wireless has begun receiving Android 4.1 Jelly Bean over-the-air. The update has hit the baby RAZR right in line with Motorola’s promise at its launch for a timeline before the end of the year.

The Android 4.1 Jelly Bean update brings a number of software improvements to the DROID RAZR M. They include Google Now, Android Beam and NFC, and improved notifications to go with the buttery smooth menu transitions. Unsurprisingly, the new OS is dressed in Motorola’s custom UI, which adds only a few extra touches to the Pure Google Experience.

1080p Droid DNA tipped for launch at Verizon and HTC’s November 13 event

HTC and Verizon have sent out invitations to a press event on November 13, where it's rumored to be announcing the Droid DNA, the US version of Japan's J Butterfly smartphone that's equipped with a 5-inch, 1080p display.

Phone fans could be in for a treat next week, as HTC and Verizon have sent out invitations to a press event to be held in New York on November 13, where we could get the first 1080p smartphone/tablet hybrid launched outside Japan.

The invite doesn’t appear to contain any hidden messages, showing nothing more than a lens-flared light on a dark background, but a few leaked press pictures could give us a better idea what these long-time partners are preparing for us.

The images popped up on @evleaks’ Twitter account this week, and show a big-screen, Verizon-branded HTC smartphone that bears a striking resemblance to the HTC J Butterfly.

Quite how such a bizarrely named phone could slip you memory, we’re not sure; but just in case it has, here’s what it’s all about. Announced last month in Japan, the J Butterfly has a 5-inch display with a headline-grabbing 1080p resolution. It seemed inevitable that HTC would let the Butterfly spread its wings at some point, and the Verizon event seems like the ideal launchpad.

Five-inch, full HD touchscreens are set to be the next big thing in the world of the smartphone display, with Sharp’s 1080p IGZO screen making its debut this week, and LG confirming recently that it’s also working on a similar panel.

It’s highly unlikely the J Butterfly name will remain on the US version though, and instead it’s likely to be another “Droid” device, this time the Droid DNA. That name has appeared on both the FCC’s website and a leaked Verizon price list, and has superseded other possible names including the HTC DLX and the HTC X5. Neither of those names are dead though, and could be used for a GSM version of the phone.

If the 5-inch, 1080p screen isn’t enough to get your pulse racing, then should the Droid DNA share the J Butterfly’s other features, it will also have Qualcomm’s high performance, 1.5GHz, quad-core Snapdragon S4 Pro processor, plus Android 4.1 Jelly Bean as its operating system.

Previous leaks have suggested a December 6 release date for the phone, but we’ll have to wait for the November 13 event to confirm this, and all the other details concerning HTC and Verizon’s new device.

Official render of Xperia Odin surfaces, looks like previous leak

Sony's alleged next flagship droid has leaked anew this time with an official photo. The Sony Xperia C650X Odin official photo is a render, which looks pretty close to the Sony Ericsson Xperia X2 and slightly resembles a Motorola RAZR with its beveled edges and use of metal in the frame.

The render is very close to the previous live picture we saw of the Xperia Odin.

The Xperia C650X Odin is rumored to feature a 5" screen with the impressive 1080p resolution, resulting in an mind-blowing density of 440 ppi, a quad-core Snapdragon S4 Pro processor with four 1.5 GHz Krait cores, a 13 MP snapper on the back, 2 GB of RAM and 32 gigs of internal storage.

Judging by the specs the Sony Xperia Odin should give the HTC J butterfly a run for its money.

Still the render could turn out to be a well made hoax and all the rumored specs are subject to change.

Motorola DROID RAZR HD duo will hit Verizon on October 18

Verizon Wireless announced that the Motorola DROID RAZR HD and RAZR MAXX HD duo will land on its shelves on October 18. The DROID RAZR HD will be priced at $199.99, while the 3300mAh sporting RAZR MAXX HD will set potential users back with $299.99.

There is no difference between the specs of the two smartphones, save for the battery and internal memory size. Both handsets feature dual-core Qualcomm Snapdragon S4 silicon, 4.7" HD screen, 8MP, and Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich. An update to Jelly Bean is in the pipeline for the duo before the year's end. Droid Razr HD launches in Canada, US absence grows more conspicuous

The Razr name lives on with the Droid Razr HD

Canadian carrier Rogers has announced that the Droid Razr HD, there called the Razr HD LTE, is now available in the great northern frontier.

The Canadian carrier is offering the new Motorola smartphone at $99.99 with a three-year contract, though it can also be purchased standalone for $599.99.

Although the Razr HD LTE hasn't yet appeared on Rogers' website, The Verge has been assured that it's available in the carrier's physical retail locations across Canada.

The Droid Razr HD's Canadian launch comes following news in September that the new Android smartphone would arrive in Germany in October as well - making the absence of a U.S. launch date all the more conspicuous.

But where's the US launch?

U.S. Motorola diehards are beginning to get frustrated by Verizon's refusal to commit to a launch date for the Motorola Droid Razr HD.

Motorola and Verizon officially unveiled the Droid Razr HD and the Razr Maxx HD at a joint event early in September, but the carrier still hasn't announced a U.S. release date.

Nothing official has been announced by either Verizon or Motorola, though an October release could certainly still happen.

Droid Razr HD specs

Motorola's Droid Razr HD comes packing a dual-core 1.5GHz Snapdragon S4 processor, 1.5GB of memory, and 16GB of onboard storage (with another 32GB available via microSD).

It will run Android 4.0: Ice Cream Sandwich out of the box, though an upgrade to Jelly Bean is promised.

The Droid Razr HD's 720p Super AMOLED display measures 4.7 inches, and, of course, LTE compatibility is guaranteed.

With Canada and Germany both getting the Droid Razr HD in October, hopefully U.S. customers won't have to wait much longer.

Intel smartphone processors currently don't support 4G

Intel is working hard to keep up

Intel has confirmed that its current Medfield processor found in the likes of the Orange San Diego and Motorola Razr i (Droid Razr M in the US) does not offer support for LTE.

However Intel is working on a solution, and Sumeet Syal, Intel's director of product marketing told Tech Crunch that it was planning on "shipping some LTE products later this year and ramping into 2013".

As 4G becomes more and more popular around the world, Intel needs to get a move on with its LTE-enabled handsets, otherwise it risks being left behind by the already well-established Nvidia, ARM and Texas Instruments.

Dual-core to rival quad-core

Alongside 4G-enabled processors, Intel is also reportedly working on a dual-core version of the Medfield chip – which could rival the quad-core chips found in the likes of the international versions of the HTC One X and Samsung Galaxy S3.

Syal said: "Our next gen product will be a dual-core but again that product will also have hyper threading so essentially… you will also have dual-core with four threads.

"So again just like we demoed that a single core hyper-threaded can outperform dual-core/quad-core I think we'll do it again when we introduce the dual-core product with four threads."

Currently there's no information regarding the 4G or dual-core handsets Intel has up its sleeve, but we'll keep our eyes and ears open for any more information.

In a quiet fashion Motorola has released a developer edition of its latest and greatest DROID RAZR HD smartphone, sporting a bootloader which can be unlocked. The handset is destined for users with a knack for flashing custom ROMs, as well as those who don't like Verizon's take on Android.

There is no release date set for the headset. A sign up page however is up and running for the overly anxious. Expect a hefty price tag and lack of warranty when the Motorola DROID RAZR HD Developer Edition becomes available.

Motorola DROID RAZR M available now, starting at $50

The Motorola DROID RAZR M is the first of the new RAZR family to become available - you can get it right now online or from Verizon.

The phone offers a 4.3" screen in a package about the same size as the new iPhone 5, a dual-core Krait processor at 1.5GHz, plus a battery that's "40% more powerful than the iPhone 5 or iPhone 4S".

And there's also LTE connectivity on Verizon's 4G network, of course. The DROID RAZR M will launch with Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich but will be updated to Jelly Bean soon - Motorola made a serious commitment to updates.

You can grab the phone (in black or white) from Motorola's own site for $99 (after a $50 mail-in rebate). Or you can get it from Verizon, who also offer a $145 bundle version, which also includes a silicon cover 3 screen protectors and a car charger.

Amazon Wireless also carries the DROID RAZR M and currently they list it at $49. All these prices are with a 2-year contract, of course.

Motorola Razr M first impressions: Maximized screen real estate at its finest

Here's our first look at the budget-friendly model of Motorola's new Droid Razr line ahead of its September 13 release date.

Motorola announced an updated line of its Razr smartphone family this week, and the first of the three to be released is the Motorola Razr M — otherwise known as its budget-friendly edition. At $100 (with a 2-year contract,) the phone stacks up competitively to other budget phones on the market such as the HTC One V. Here’s our first look at what Motorola has in store for its Razr line.

It’s funny to think that a 4.3-inch screen phone these days is considered “compact,” but that’s exactly how Motorola described the Razr M during its press conference Wednesday. The near edge-to-edge design offers more screen per square inch — which makes the advertised 4.3-inch screen bigger than it sounds. The 960 x 540 resolution display itself is truly vivid especially under the gorilla glass, and the whole device feels more expensive than your average budget phone. Thanks to its Kevlar back, the anti-scratch and added grip makes for a beautifully-designed phone that feels like it’s worth a ton more than one Benjamin.

While the Motorola Razr M comes with an internal memory of 8GB and 1GB of RAM, storage is expandable with the micro-SD slot placed right on the side of the phone. The SIM card slot is also right next to it, so no more opening the back of your phone and digging your nails in to remove either chips. The device is runs on Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich, which is a bit of a disappointment, but Motorola says all the new Razr phones should be getting Jellybean by the end of the year.

The Razr M also comes with a dual-core Qualcomm MSM8960 Snapdragon S4 processor, 8 MP back camera, and a 3 MP front-facing shooter. The dual-core processor makes the Razr M run extremely fast. Switching between screens is swift, and you can program your own pages and add them as needed. To delete, simply hold and drag the app icon or page to the trash can.  

What’s new about the Razr M is a circle interface that allows you to customize shortcuts. For example, new text messages can appear on the most prominent circle while the second circle is dedicated to weather. For each city you add, you can flip the circle to navigate through the cities and get updated weather information for each location.

According to Motorola, one full charge can deliver an impressive 20 hours of battery life but we’ll see if that claim holds true. Be on a lookout for our full review shortly. In the meantime, the Motorola Razr M is available for pre-order now at Verizon with an official release date of September 13. To get the $100 price, you will have to mail in a $50 rebate through Verizon.

On top of announcing three new consumer model Android smartphones for consumers, Motorola has unveiled two new handsets for developers.

Developer editions for both the Droid Razr M and Droid Razr HD are on the way. Both developer editions are identical to the consumer models, with the added bonus of an unlockable bootloader to dive into the device's code.

As announced earlier, the Droid Razr M sports a 4.3-inch qHD Super AMOLED display, a dual-core Qualcomm Snapdragon S4 processor, 1GB RAM, 8GB of storage, NFC support, and an 8MP camera capable of 1080p video capture.

The Droid Razr HD packs a 4.7-inch HD display and is only 8.4mm thick. It is built for speed and battery life, with a dual-core Qualcomm Snapdragon S4 processor and a 2500mAh battery that boasts 16 hours of talk time, 10 hours of video, and 6 hours of web searching.

Droid for devs

Developers can already place their order for the Razr M developer edition directly through Motorola and will start shipping September 13. At $549.99, it is a little bit pricier than the $99 consumer model, but makes up for the difference with the unlockable bootloader.

The Droid Razr HD developer model will be a longer wait, with no information announced about its release date or final price. Those interested in snagging one though can register online through Motorola for updates when the handset is available to order.

Motorola announces new battery-packed Droid RAZR HD, RAZR Maxx HD, and RAZR M

Today Motorola unveiled a new three-member RAZR family, featuring the Droid RAZR HD, Maxx HD, and RAZR M, in New York City.

Motorola announced three new smartphones at Gotham Hall in New York City. Part of its brand new Droid collection, the RAZR HD, Maxx HD, and RAZR M focus on edge-to-edge displays and insane battery life. 

Called “On Display”, Motorola’s conference kicked off with a band singing about America to a crowd of reporters who look like they’d rather not be forced into some mediocre concert. Once that bit of awkwardness ended, Eric Schmidt took the stage to talk up Motorola’s sales numbers for a while. Then there was more talking, mostly revolving around Motorola’s new focus on unprecedented battery life. 

After more talking, and a couple jabs at Apple and Samsung, the newest Motorola smartphones were finally unveiled. Three to be exact, all part of Motorola’s new and improved RAZR family.

The higher-end devices in the line up are called the Droid RAZR HD and Droid RAZR Maxx HD. The RAZR HD is packing a 4.7-inch edge-to-edge display, Gorilla Glass, dual-core processor, and supports 4G LTE (obviously). Motorola also claims the screen boasts 78% more pixels and 85% more color saturation than the iPhone 4S. In benchmark tests, the new device can browse the web using Chrome up to 40% faster than Safari on the iPhone. Motorola really seems to be after Apple, there have been a lot of comparisons.

For some reason Motorola tried to show off this browsing speed using the Wi-Fi in the building, rather than Verizon’s wireless network so browsing speed was not impressive in the demo. The RAZR HD is NFC-enabled and Verizon has given up on blocking Google Wallet. The real star here, however, is the outstanding battery life. Apparently the RAZR HD can handle up to 16 hours of talk time, basically unheard of in the smartphone world.

The Droid RAZR Maxx HD appears to be running the same specs as the RAZR HD, but with the a maxxed out battery (sorry, couldn’t help it) taken from the RAZR Maxx. Meaning that you’re looking at around 21 hours of talk time and enough juice to watch an entire season of 30 Rock.

The mid-range Droid RAZR M rounds out the family dynamic, satisfying the needs of more casual users. The RAZR M has a nearly edgeless, 4.3-inch Super AMOLED display (using Gorilla Glass), 4G LTE support, 8GB of storage, 1GB of RAM, dual-core processor, and an 8-megapixel camera in the back. Even at that size, however, it manages to squeeze in 40% more screen real estate than the iPhone 4S. The battery can handle up to 20 hours of music streaming, so there clearly won’t be a huge sacrifice in battery when moving from the RAZR HD to the RAZR M. 

But here’s an interesting twist of events. Despite being owned by Google, Motorola’s latest line up will not ship with Jelly Bean. Instead they will be updated from Ice Cream Sandwich to Android’s latest OS — which was released two months ago — before the end of the year.

Pre-orders for the RAZR M start today at 5pm EDT (New York time). It will retail for $100, presumably on contract, and is eligible for the share everything plan. The RAZR HD and Maxx HD will be available sometime before the holidays.

Motorola launched into what company CEO Dennis Woodside called "the new Motorola" Wednesday with the introduction of its new flagship phone: the Droid Razr HD.

The company also threw an HD handset - the Droid Razr Maxx HD - with an amped up battery life in the mix as well.

Calling the Razr HD "the most compact, big screen smartphone," Motorola Senior Vice President of product management Rick Osterloch ran through the 4.7-inch displayed device, saying the screen "stretches to the corners."

The display has 78 percent more pixels than the original Razr and 85 percent more color saturation than the iPhone 4S, Osterloh said.

Demonstrating HD quality video, Osterloh made the point the Razr HD is meant for high-quality photos and videos.

So high def

Running a dual-core processor and compatible with Verizon's LTE network, the Razr HD is "built for speed."

As with all Motorola phones from now on, the HD comes pre-installed with Google Chrome, which Osterloh said is 40 percent faster than iPhone 4S with Safari.

A 2500mAh battery and a talk time of up to 16 hours makes this Razr's battery capacity "almost double that of the competition."

It's thin too, measuring 8.4mm thick.

Droid Razr Maxx HD

For those who crave even more battery power, Motorola also introduced the Razr Maxx HD.

Fueling 32GB of storage, the phone can stream up to 27 hours of music, 10 hours of video over 4G LTE and has a talk time of up to 21 hours.

"It has a ridiculously longer battery life," Osterloh said.

Both phones run Android 4.0: Ice Cream Sandwich, though they'll be upgradable to Jelly Bean later this year.

Both will be on sale "by the holidays."

Motorola Droid RAZR HD goes official, MAXX version in tow

Motorola is pushing forward with the second generation of its Droid RAZR family brand and just announced the Motorola Droid RAZR HD. The trademark slender body of the handset has been changed up a big, but it's still more compact than a Samsung Galaxy S III or HTC One X.

The RAZR HD measures 131.9 x 67.9 x 8.4mm and weighs 146g, so it's thicker than the previous one, but the thickmness is more uniform.

As the name suggests, the Droid RAZR HD has a larger 4.7" edge-to-edge Super AMOLED display of 720p resolution.

The back of the device is again made of Kevlar, but this time it wraps around the edges of the headset too. The camera here is an 8MP snapper with 1080p video recording and LED flash.

The RAZR HD is powered by a Qualcomm chipset with a dual-core Krait CPU, 1GB RAM and Adreno 225 GPU. It will be running Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich out of the box. It will be upgraded to Jelly Bean later on - of course, Motorola is a Google company and we expected nothing less.

Chrome will come pre-installed on the new DROID RAZRs, and Motorola was keen to point out how fast it is.

The battery on the Motorola Droid RAZR HD is 2,530mAh, so battery life should still be good with the power-efficient 28nm Qualcomm cores. For example, it offers 16 hours of talk time, nearly as much as the DROID RAZR.

There will be a Motorola RAZR HD MAXX too, with the same 3,300mAh battery as the previous version. It measures 131.9 x 67.9 x 9.3mm and weighs 157g. Battery life is listed as up to 21 hours of talk time, 27 hours of music streaming and 10 hours of video streaming. Impressive indeed.

Other interesting features on the HD include NFC connectivity, dual-band Wi-Fi, Bluetooth 4.0 and an HDMI port. The RAZR HD will have 16GB of built-in memory, while the RAZR MAXX HD will have double that. Both have microSD card slots.

The LTE-touting Motorola Droid RAZR HD and RAZR MAXX HD will launch on Verizon before the holidays. There will be a GSM version of the RAZR HD too, but not the RAZR MAXX HD for now.

Motorola Droid Razr M: What you need to know

Motorola is getting ready to take on the toughest smartphone competition with the Droid Razr M. Leaked images and specs have given us a sneak peak at the Android 4.0: Ice Cream Sandwich device ahead of today's official unveiling at a Motorola-Verizon event in New York City.

Also known as the Motorola XT907, or by its codename the Scorpion Mini, leaked Images of the Droid Razr M have it looking similar to the Droid RAZR and the Droid RAZR Maxx in size and design. The phone is set launch on Verizon's 4G LTE network.

Early spec reports

Leaked specifications have tipped the Droid Razr M's processor as a dual-core SnapDragon S4 clocked at 1.5GHz. Complimenting that is 1GB of DDR2 RAM and 8GB of internal storage, with room for a removable MicroSD card of up to 32GB.

The Droid Razr M's screen will be a 4.3-in. Super Amoled Advanced display sporting a resolution of 1196 by 720. Crafted with Gorilla Glass 2, it will be highly scratch resistant, but isn't edge-to-edge as was once rumored.

In the camera department, the Droid Razr M will have an 8MP video camera capable of capturing in 720p. The front-facing video chat camera will be 3MP.

One OS behind

According to leaks and early reports, the Droid Razr M will launch running Android 4.0: Ice Cream Sandwich, rather than the latest version of the Android OS, Android 4.1: Jelly Bean. Since the new Motorola handset has beefy specs, an possible upgrade to the latest OS version does seem possible.

Ready for Verizon's 4G LTE network

Today's official unveiling of the Droid Razr M in NYC is a joint event hosted by exclusive Droid Razr carrier Verizon Wireless and manufacturer Motorola. While Verizon's 4G LTE network is a centerpiece of the push for this new smartphone, it will of course run on 3G, if Verizon's 4G network is not available in your area.

The Droid Razr M will be Mobile Hotspot capable, able to connect up to 8 devices on 4G, and 5 on 3G.

A two-tone phone?

The first images of the Droid Razr M have shown it with Motorola's signature Kevlar-patterned backing, but with cases in either white or black. The result is a two-tone look that has elicited some mixed opinions the new phone's aesthetic.

Release date?

No official word on the release date of the Droid Razr M has been given, but word on the street points to an October or November release for this new Motorola handset. This is information will likely be revealed at today's Motorola-Verizon launch even in NYC.
