Nokia outs Q3 2012 results, reports reduced operating loss

Nokia's financial results for Q3 2012 are out and things are still looking grim for the Finns, which have reported an operating loss of $754 million.

If you recall, for each of the last three quarters Nokia had to report north of a $1 billion loss. That's why the company had to undertake some unpleasant job cuts and we guess the results are starting to show up.

There's more bad news for Nokia, too, as the company only managed to push 76.6 million featurephones, from which the Asha lineup accounted for 6.5 million units. The really bad news is that Lumia sales have dropped to 2.9 million (from a total of 6.3 million smartphones shipped) compared to last quarter's 4 million. The Windows Phone 8 launch just couldn't come soon enough for the Finns, which are now facing a do or die situation.

The report also shows that Nokia Siemens Networks managed to make a profit of $238.5 million, managing to helping the company in these hard times of transition to Windows Phone. Speaking of that, Microsoft also chimed in with their $250 million cheque for the quarter.

Lastly, Nokia reports cash reserves of $4.66 billion, which doesn't compare particularly favorably to the $6.64 billion the company had in its pockets at the same point of last year. In the report, the company issued a warning towards investors that the upcoming Q4 quarter will still be bumpy. The reason, as Stephen Elop puts it is "product transitions and our ramp up plan for our new devices."

Nokia may file a lawsuit seeking a ban on HTC WP 8X

According to the latest online gossip, Nokia considers seeking ban for the upcoming HTC flagship – Windows Phone 8X. The Finns accuse HTC of copying the Lumia 820 front panel design for its Windows Phone 8X.

Nokia unveiled the Lumia 820 and 920 in the beginning of September. HTC announced its two WP-powered headsets two weeks later. Shortly after Nokia’s EVP of Sales and Marketing tweeted "It takes more than matching color to match the innovation of the Lumia 920." – aimed directly at HTC’s new phones.

The source says that Nokia is going to take serious actions against HTC and seek a ban on the Windows Phone 8 sales.

No matter what Nokia’s intentions are, both Nokia and HTC have huge support from Microsoft (and Qualcomm), and we bet the issue will be resolved without entering the court room. And even if it did, we doubt Nokia will end up victorious – it takes way more than two weeks to develop a smartphone and there's no way HTC managed to redesign the 8X in the short time between the Lumia 820 announcement and its own event.

Nokia Lumia 820 gets official reveal

Nokia Lumia 820 gets official reveal
Second in the line-up, just as pretty

Alongside the flagship Nokia Lumia 920, the Finns have unveiled a lower-spec handset in the form of the Nokia Lumia 820.

Running the new Windows Phone 8 OS, the handset comes with a processor, the power of which it TBC, and a 4.3-inch screen.

It's the same polycarbonate body with ceramic highlights found on the 920 with a removable back cover to boot.

No Pureview

Although it doesn't feature the PureView tech of its larger, more impressive (and probably more expensive) sibling the Lumia 920, the Nokia Lumia 820's camera comes with Carl Zeiss optics. We're waiting on a megapixel count.

Also on board are NFC connectivity and location services like the AR-friendly City Lens.

The handset is rocking a 1650mAh battery and microSD storage, and will be available in an exciting array of colours - red, white, blue, purple, grey, white and yellow.

You'll be able to upgrade to a wireless charging shell if you want to, although you'll have to buy that separately.

Stay tuned for the TechRadar hands on Nokia Lumia 820 review, coming shortly.
