iPad 4th Gen. announced with double the power, same $500 price

4th Gen iPad

In addition to launching the iPad Mini, Apple has also refreshed its full-size iPad range, bringing it in-line with the new tablet, the iPhone 5 and new iPods.

Apple October 23 News, Rumors, and Launch AnnouncementsApple has announced the fourth generation iPad. Introduced by Phil Schiller on stage at a special event in San Jose in California today, just prior to the new iPad Mini, the refreshed model falls in-line with the other new additions to Apple’s mobile range.

At first glance, the new iPad (should that be the new, new iPad?) looks identical to the iPad introduced earlier this year. Get a little closer and you’ll see that the 30-pin connector has been replaced by the new Lightning connector, just like the one featured on the iPhone 5, iPods and the new iPad Mini.

Externally, nothing else has changed, and the tablet still has the same 9.7-inch, 2048 x 1536 pixel ‘Retina’ display dominating the front panel. Inside though, there are a few more alterations.

The major change is with the processor, as the fourth-generation iPad uses the new A6X, which apparently doubles the graphics and CPU performance over the A5X. This should mean the tablet will be even faster, and Apple also promise improved gaming, quicker app launch times and sharper photos and videos.

Other new features include an updated FaceTime camera with 720p video, an improved 4G LTE radio, dual-band Wi-Fi and like the iPad Mini, even more 4G LTE network compatibility.

Apple has kept the pricing the same too, with the 16GB Wi-Fi model up for $500, or $630 if you want to add cellular connectivity. It’s not available through the Apple Store online yet, but should be up for pre-order on October 26, just like the iPad Mini.

Apple's iPhone 5 event live coverage

The Apple event is underway and the star of the show will be the new iPhone, though we expect to see a couple of new iPods as well. Here's the place where we'll be uploading the new info as soon as it becomes available, so make sure to keep an eye on this space.

Apple doesn't do live streaming, unfortunately, so we can't just embed a live video stream from the event as we usually do. Those Cupertino guy sure like being mysterious, don't they?

We've all seen the many leaked photos of various components, even whole prototypes, heard about what features the iPhone 5 will or won't have, now we're just waiting for Tim Cook to take the stage and put an end to the guesswork.

And Tim Cook is on stage!

He took some time to give us the statistics on Mac and Mountain Lion - there have been 7 million updates to Mountain Lion, Mac market share is up 27% in July.

iPads are on the rise too - 17 million were sold this quarter, bringing the total to 84 million.

iPhone 5 tidbits leak: LTE, iTunes 11, new iPods confirmed

iPhone-5 Apple.com search

Crafty Apple fans have found links on Apple.com search that appear to confirm the iPhone 5, iTunes 11, 4G LTE, and new iPods.

Apple’s big fall press conference is less than two hours away (10am PST), but that doesn’t mean the Internet is prepared to wait. Small “confirmations” of existing rumors are popping up all over the Web. Do not take this information as fact just yet, but it’s looking highly likely that the new iPhone will indeed be called the iPhone 5, it will have 4G LTE connectivity, a new iPod Touch is coming, a new iPod Nano is coming, and iTunes 11 may also be announced.

Most of this information comes from 9to5Mac, which has done some rather sleuthy searching on Apple.com’s website. We’ve verified that if you search for “iPhone-5″ on Apple’s site, a link to what appears to be a forthcoming press release appears in the search results. However, when you attempt to click on any of the articles, they return a 404 error, which could mean that they just aren’t live yet or that they aren’t real articles to begin with — it’s possible that they were placeholders for an iPhone that never came to be. However, it’s more likely that this phone will be called iPhone 5. The press invitations Apple sent out for this event had a giant “5″ in them — a pretty strong hint that Apple isn’t planning to get crafty with its naming scheme.

Similar searches on Apple.com seem to prove other rumors:

  • New iPods are coming as well, according to searches, which makes sense as Apple announced iPod updates with the iPhone 4S. Earlier this morning, we posted a new rumor that the iPod Touch will get a FaceTime camera, GPS, and new colors. It’s likely that the other iPods will be updated as well.
  • iTunes 11 may be shown. Supposedly, it’s a pretty big overhaul of iTunes. Perhaps Apple is finally going to use Lala?
  • 4G LTE connectivity is also hinted at in search results.
We’ll have full coverage of Apple’s actual announcements in the very near future, so stay tuned!

Will new iPods join the iPhone at Apple’s September 12 event?

ipod-nano-2011-update

Apple may reveal a range of new iPods at its event on September 12, and given the amount if iPhone leaks, they could be the only surprise.

Apple’s talk about “doubling down” on secrecy appears to have been bluster, as a steady stream of leaks over the past few months have built an almost complete picture of what many believe to be the next iPhone.

There’s so much information out there, that its big reveal on September 12 could be less exciting than Apple events of old. Provided that is, the leaks really do relate to the new iPhone, and aren’t part of an elaborate smokescreen to obfuscate the true new device.

If that’s the case, then Tim Cook and his team will have done an impressive job of fooling us all, but if it’s not, then will the event hold any surprises at all?

Leaving aside the prospect of an iPad Mini, what about the iPod range? 9to5mac.com suggests a new Nano and Shuffle could join the new iPhone at the Yerba Buena Center this week, along with the possibility of a third — potentially new — iPod model too.

The report says the new Nano and Shuffle will come in various colors, and that one — presumably the Nano — will come with a choice of memory capacities, while the other will only have one option. Nothing is known about the mystery third device.

Apple’s last Nano refresh was in October 2011, but the current seventh-generation Nano is almost identical to the sixth-generation device, with the differences between them almost solely software-based and applicable to the older 2010 model too. Apple doesn’t even list the seventh-gen Nano as a device on its own site, preferring to stick with the sixth-generation Nano introduced in 2010.

The Nano is perfectly placed for an update then, and as Apple combined the iPhone and iPod launch for its October event last year, it’s not a stretch to see them doing the same this year.

The good thing is, we’ve not seen or heard very much about any new iPods — bar a version of the Nano sporting a camera at the beginning of the year –  so even if the iPhone looks familiar when it makes its debut, at least they’ll be a surprise.
